- Don't know about mental problems but:
-
- Calcium is required for muscle function, blood clotting and
- bone development. A deficiency of calcium in a young animal causes
- rickets, a condition in which the bone is not fully hardened. The
- bones become weak and the long bones may bow.
- Bone is a dynamic tissue. It is constantly being remodelled
- and calcium removed and replaced. The condition known as nutritional
- secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSH) causes more calcium to be removed
- than is deposited, weakening the bones. In some bones, particularly
- those of the skull, connective tissue invades the affected bone,
- which actually increases in size. Hence a common name for the
- condition is big-head disease.
- NSH usually results when a diet containing low levels of
- calcium and high levels of phosphorus is fed. The high level of
- phosphorus impairs the utilization of calcium, the blood level of
- calcium drops, stimulating the parathyroid gland to release a hormone
- which increases the rate at which calcium is removed from bone. The
- condition is often caused by feeding high levels of wheat bran, which
- has a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 1:12. Hence NSH is also called
- bran disease.
