-
- So how do you figure they ought to be treated? Would you read them
- stories? Wear funny hats? Tapdance? What? When horses are not being
- handled, eating, or taking a crap, they just stand there and look
- stupid for the most part. At least all of mine do. One mare in particular
- lets about seven feet of tongue hang out the side of her mouth looking
- much like the village idiot.

-
- How do you know that they are old timers? How do you know that they
- are experiencing their final days? How do you know that their days,
- final or not, are unpleasant?
-
- You have successfully disabused you mind of the notion that horses
- are like puppy dogs and kitty cats. The next plateau will be reached
- when you realize that horses are half-ton beasts with a brain about the
- size of a walnut. They have marvelous personalities and they all are
- characters. But don't confuse personality with intelligence. I've got
- socks that are more intelligent than most horses.
