- Having gotten quite a few replies to my query on what sort of boat I
- should look for (Re: Looking for name to go with sailboat...), I now
- have a list of about a half dozen which seem to fit my needs. The
- next step, of course, is to look for a boat which is on that list.
-
- The local newspaper has practically nothing in it. Not surprising, of
- course. This is a small town. I also looked at some out-of-town
- newspapers (Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida). They have more, and
- it looks like the Sunday edition will have even more.
-
- Several people recommended "Soundings" but the local newstand does not
- have it, and has never heard of it. I bought a sailing magazine from
- them (Cruise World, or something like that) which has ads. But all the
- ads are for expensive boats. Understandable, of course. The boat that
- I am looking for is hardly worth putting an ad in a national magazine
- for :-)
-
- One interesting thing, however, was that under "Boats for Sail" in the
- magazine were a couple of 800 numbers which claimed to have databases
- for used boats, and that they would send a list for free if only I were
- to call them. I did, and they promised. Real person one time, who wanted
- to know my price range, length of boat, etc. Sounded friendly. Other one
- an answering machine.
-
- Anyone have any experience with these 800 number lists? Intuitively, it
- sounds like a good idea. Someone with an old boat, which they would let
- go for a few thousand, is hardly going to advertise a lot or use a broker.
- But they might very well pay a few bucks to have a listing in something
- like this. And one can deal directly with the owner, rather than a broker.
- But perhaps there are some pitfalls I don't know about. Any thoughts?
-
- Thanks for your time,
-
- John
