- [Jeff Wallace is thinking about buying a Cal20 for $1000]
-
- As you say, the Cal20 is an excellent Bay boat. Once you get
- used to its homely appearance (that nasty Lapworth foredeck!), you
- will appreciate its many virtues: huge cockpit, brick-shithouse
- rig (double lower shrouds, uppers, AND jumper struts), big iron
- pig on the keel. I owned #1554 for 12 years and was a very happy
- sailor. I've never heard of a Cal20 getting pushed all the way
- over on the Bay, and that's something.
-
- As far as minuses, there are a few. This is no light-air boat (although
- you can surf on those Berkeley rollers in the summertime). You
- can install an adjustable backstay, but it won't do much. The boat
- is tough to gybe - rounds up pretty badly. A spinnaker won't make the
- boat very much faster off the wind - I'm not sure why. Make sure you
- have a good set of foulies, too.
-
- $1000 sounds like a pretty good price. I would look for the following
- in a used boat: reinforced headstay-to-deck fitting, real winches, bow
- and stern pulpits, forehatch (rare), reefing system, lifelines, split
- mainsheet, instruments, working electrical system. Make sure you inspect
- the chain plate area: gelcoat crazing is OK, but look for structural
- problems.
-
- A new suit of sails will probably cost you $2000. Insurance: $150/year.
- Steve Seale in Alameda has all of the parts you are likely to need.
-
- You will need a 5-6 hp motor. The well in the cockpit was invented by
- Satan in one of his fouler moods. Use a bracket.
-
-
- Good luck,
-
- Stefan
