  24. There is the well worn argument that McDonalds has large areas in the
  25. Amazon for their hamburgers to graze...  There are several multinational
  26. companies in the Amazon exploring/exploiting from minerals to farming.
  27. These include Volkswagen, Brittish Steel...  It's a fairly long list.
  28. I'm sure there are USA companies there too (Dana Mining ???).

  30. Then, the Brazilian government, mainly out of the infinite wisdom of
  31. the military regime (1964 till very recently), has several mining and
  32. smelting facilities there as well (one of the foundries burns *trees*
  33. because it is cheaper than coal/gas/oil).  All of this to pay our
  34. foreign debt...  Oh yes, when Reagun decided to build up his army, the
  35. interest rates went up and so did our debt.

  37. My point is, people in the rich countries can do more than act locally.
  38. For instance, one can buy shares in the companies that are spoiling the
  39. Amazon and embarass the boards at the AGMs by standing up and asking
  40. questions.  There are many other ways of helping...
