-
- Yes, it does! A stock V-12 BMW without governor will redline in top gear,
- translating (if I remember right) to speeds in the neighborhood of 170mph. As
- I posted earlier, the 155mph governors on the v12 cars and the M5 are for tax
- reasons, but yes, they are there. At least, that's what Road&Track, Car &
- Driver, Motor Trend, BMW Car Club's Roundel, and my neighborhood BMW dealer
- claim. But this is after all the VW channel, and though both BMW's and VW's
- are wonderful German works of art, I suspect some of the VW fans are getting
- tired of BMW specs.....

- Well yes, 125 is fast, but there are plenty of drivers who feel comfortable
- driving faster than that. Hell, I occasionally drive faster than that in
- Illinois (But you didn't hear that from me). What is necessary is not an is-
- sue. If necessity were the only issue in car construction, we wouldn't have
- cars that could accelerate to 60 in under 6 seconds (under 20 for that matter),
- cars with top speeds above 50, etc., etc. The purpose of the automobile is
- to serve the driver as best it can, not to protect the driver from himself.
- If I have the cash to buy a car that can go 170mph, and I can find some place
- where I can safely (and legally if possible) drive at 170mph, you better
- believe I will.
