- Unfortunately or fortunately a GTI is NOT a Mazda. The GTIs and GLIs
- have different driveshafts from their Golf/Jetta bretheren. The
- shafts are larger in diameter, and are of equal weight, therefore
- are harder to comeby than the run of the mill Golf/Jetta drive
- shafts. A friend of mine bent one of his driveshafts on his
- GTI during the Maine Forrest Rally and it took TWO months for
- him to find a used replacement.
-
- The moral of the story is that with a GTI/GLI you are better off
- getting the joints replaced on your original axles. Better yet
- if you have the patience, etc, have VW remove the joints, take them
- home clean them, if there are no major marks, grooves, etc., repack
- them yourself, put new boots on (infact the VW boot kits come with
- all you need to do each side), then put the axles back yourself. Or
- just replace the boots and joints, etc.
