  22. When I replaced the rear brake shoes on my 69 bus (same 46mm size) I 
  23. bought a crescent wrench from Orchard Supply Hardware for ~$60 and a 
  24. four foot length of galvanize steel pipe.  Using the pipe as a cheater
  25. off the end of the wrench the nut came off and went back on easily.

  27. There is an adaptor that many VW shops carry.  It is a thick piece of
  28. cast alloy with a 46mm socket hole on one side and a 1/2 socket hole
  29. on the other:

  39. None of the shops I visited had them in stock when I needed one so I
  40. sprung for the cresent wrench.
