- I just got a call from a friend who's water pump
- died on his '87 FOX, and decided that replacing the
- timing belt might be a fitting way to finish up a day
- under the hood. He dove into both jobs without a
- manual, and now seems to be having trouble getting the
- lower cover off of the timing belt. I'd think this would
- be a pretty straight forward task, but he doesn't think
- so. He's already got the main pulley off of the crank
- (the toughest part if I remember correctly).
-
- I don't have any manuals handy right now, and it's
- been a while since I did my '84 GTI's belt. Would
- anyone offer a few lines of wisdom on this subject.
- I guess he's got the water pump done. I've already
- given him a tongue lashing for not consulting a good shop
- manual before starting.
-
- Thanks,

- I looked at this last Wednesday. I was looking for my timing
- marks on the crankshaft and water belt pulley to try to check
- my timing. (I know, I know, my timing marks are located behind
- the distributor on the clutch flywheel, I misread the manuals and/or
- was confused!). I pulled the top cover off pretty easily, 2 bolts
- on either side of the oil filler cap and removal of an allen plug.
- The lower (plastic) cover appears to need at least 2 or 3 bolts removed.
- I removed these bolts and then realized that the cover encloses
- the water belt pullies. I stopped at this point and reread my
- manual and eventually found my timing mark, put back the upper
- cover and moved on.
-
- It seems to me that in order to remove that lower cover, you
- need to remove the water pump pullies first. I think (WARNING,
- DANGER WILL ROBINSON, I haven't tried this) that after these
- pullies are off (and those bolts are removed, (one is a bit tough
- to get at down by the side of one of the pullies)) the cover _should_
- come off.
-
- I think (again I don't know for sure) that the pullies have 4 bolts
- on the front to undo. Incidently, I have an '88 Fox.
-
- Hope your friend has some luck. Let us hear how he makes out with
- this. I'll probably need some advice in 10k miles when I replace the timing
- belt ( at 60K, I like to live on the edge :-))
