  12. My '87 Omni had the following symptoms:
  13.
  14. 1. running hotter than normal
  15. 2. not overheating
  16. 3. apparent water flow in radiator (water gets hot enough)
  17. 4. turning on heater helped
  18. 5. I flushed out radiator with store-bought flushing agent to no
  19.    effect
  20.
  21. I assumed because of 2 and 3 that thermostat was ok.  It was
  22. suggested here (and I concurred) that there was crud built up
  23. either in the engine or radiator and to take it into a radiator
  24. shop for cleaning/ replacement.
  25.
  26. Though I didn't think it would help, out of desperation, I replaced
  27. thermostat and problem went away.  I conclude the thermostat was
  28. frozen in a partially open position or didn't open enough to really
  29. cool the engine water adequately.
  30.
  31. Thanks for the net help, as your suggestions helped me understand
  32. better how the damned thing worked.
  33.
  34. Mike
