- I would be inclined to question this. As an owner of an Austin Healey, I
- read much literature on this and other marques, and non-stock modification
- is a very frequent and widely accepted practice. It was even done by the
- manufacturers themselves.
-
- Healeys were constantly being modified by the Healeys themselves, and
- they were always fussing around with race prepared "works" cars to make
- them faster, better handling, etc. They offered performance enhancing kits
- for sale to the public so the owner could make an existing car faster.
- Long after production ceased, Donald Healey was attending Healey shows
- where people had made numerous "improvements", including installing V8
- engines in place of the stock 6, and he applauded these activities.
- Anything that improved power, speed, handling, or drivability was
- encouraged.
-
- There are purists who insist that every detail be exactly as it was
- when the car left the factory, and this is fine, but it is not the
- only way to look at it.
-
- I think it is good to talk about modifications, with the proviso that
- they not violate the intent of the design, i.e. putting a racing cam
- in an MGA is cool, mag wheels and 50 series tires on a Model T is not.
- But regardless of your taste, we must not dictate. We should set the
- tone by example, not by censure.
