- I've been waiting for a good opportunity to mention a new speaker
- I heard a few months ago.
-
- What Peter says above WAS true until recently. Magnepan have
- released a new model, the Model 20, which does use a double
- magnet, one on each side of the speaker panel.
-
- An advantage of this is that the magnetic field is more uniform,
- and plane motion is more linear with large excursions. And, having
- two magnets more-or-less doubles the flux density (???) and permits
- the speaker to generate a higher sound level (I think this is the
- correct way to phrase this, not really sure).
-
- In producing the Model 20, Magnepan also developed/employed a
- magnet material which is stronger in itself.
-
- Finally, Magnepan lovers (who have lots of cash) can get full
- bass response; the Model 20 is spec'd down only 3dB at 20 Hz.
- This is nearly a full octave extension better than previous
- Magnepans.
-
- I auditioned the Model 20s at The Audible Difference in Palo
- Alto (CA). It was impressive, and Bela' Fleck really came across.
-
- If you've got circa $8500 to spend on speakers, check these out!
