- Well, certainly the benefits are better in the public sector,
- at least in terms of days off. At most private companies, we get
- about 8-10 holidays per year. In some, a couple of these may
- be floaters, so that if you want to take off Martin Luther King
- Day or Veterans Day, you can use a floater for it. However, in
- the public sector, they tend to get all these holidays off. I'd
- guess that they get 5 more holidays per year than those of us
- in the private sector. I'd be willing to pay the folks in
- the public sector more in exchange for more days worked
- per year.
-
- Part of this, I think, is that the heads of the public employees'
- unions tend to use emotional, misleading arguments to make
- sure they get all possible holidays off: "What, we don't all
- get Veteran's Day off? This shows you don't care about veterans.
- What, you think we shouldn't all get Martin Luther King Day off?
- You bigot!" And on and on, ignoring the fact that in the private
- sector most of us have to chose which of several holidays we want
- off: I can take of Martin Luther King Day or Veterans Day, but not
- both.
