- There is not one single example of a major agricultural nation in which
- the agricultural sector is not heavily subsidized and influenced by the
- government. Certainly, in the USA, where farmers get loans from the feds,
- get payments for certain crops or for resting land, send their children to
- land grant schools, use pesticides and fertilizers developed at state and
- federally funded university research labs in accordance with advice from
- Ag department technical assistance, rely on federally funded water programs
- for irrigation, government sponsored pest eradication and customs guards,
- and then sell products in an
- international market using Federal subsidies and relying on the pressure of
- the federal government to break into markets ..... --- it would be truly
- insane to speak of a free market. Perhaps you have some other country in
- mind. Or is it that you share the widespread theory that state aid to the
- rich and politically influential is too ideologically embarassing to
- be mentioned?
