- I just joined a parent support group for parents of kids with any kind
- of disability or special need (premature birth, birth defects, DOWNS, vision
- or hearing loss, genetic defects, etc.), and was wondering if there is a
- news group for these parents. I am fairly new to this UNIX stuff and to
- the usenet, and have poked around and found k12.ed.special and
- alt.education.disabled, but neither seeded to carry much traffic on this.
-
- We had a premature daughter in Jan 92 at 24 weeks gestational. Mom got
- PIH (pregnancy induced hyper-tension, blood pressure hit 170/130) and we
- could not get it under control. Rachael spent 5 months in the hospital,
- had surgery for a perforated bowl, and 2 eye surgeries. She is doing
- ok now and gets her 1st pair of glasses tomorrow! She is developing very
- slowly (3-4 months behind where a term baby would be) but is still hitting
- the milestones (has rolled over but hasn't come close to crawling).
-
- If anyone knows of an appropriate news group please let me know by e-mail.
- I thought a world wide network support group would be kind of neat.
-
- Also, this group is looking for any reference material that can be used
- to assist new parents. One book that we used that was very helpful is
- "The Premature Baby Book" (we have heard that an updated version was to be
- published this or next year. It explains a lot of the problems that can
- come with premature babies, case histories, medical advances, and dealing
- with the emotions that go with all of this.
-
- Other material that would be useful is computer software for the visually
- impaired. This support groups wants to build a database so that it can
- refer new parents to people who have been through a similar experience.
-
- Thanks.
