- This thread was fun, but quickly degenerated because it was filled with
- large generalizations like "They never spanked me" or "they always played
- with me when I wanted". While these are nice, I was wondering if people would
- share more intimate moments about the things their parents did right. I have
- one moment that stands out for each of my parents. I'll start with my Mom.
-
- My mom lived with her mother until her mother died. There was a brief 10
- year marriage but even then my grandmother dominated my mother's life. While
- raising 2 small children she needed my grandmother's help. But none the less
- she always felt trapped by her life. Mom wanted to make sure the same thing
- didn't happen to us. She used to take me out in the evenings to mail letters
- at the airport. I can remember she would always say, "Do you see that
- airplane? It's going somewhere. Don't you wish you were on it?"
-
- While my Mom didn't have the strength and courage to break away from the life
- that had entrapped her, she did have the wisdom to teach us not to make this
- mistake in our lives, but to see the world and make our own way in it. She
- not only let us go, she practically shoved us away. I will always thank
- her for that.
