- Yes, consistent and persistent are the keys. I have a friend who is
- Chinese and has an American wife and was able to teach Chinese to his
- 4 daugthers. He insists that they address him in Chinese. The wife
- ends up picking up a lot of Chinese, too. It's amazing how the kids
- can switch back and forth between Chinese and English effortlessly.
-
- I also want to point out that it's very important for the eldest to
- use the Non-English language. If the eldest tries to speak it, so
- will the younger ones. If the eldest doesn't, it's unlikely the
- younger ones will. I've seen that in my nieces and nephews.
-
- I have a friend who is born here and both his parents are Russian.
- His father is very strict about him speaking Russian at home. He
- is fluent in Russian, speaking/reading/writing. He said when he
- was little, if he starts speaking English, his father will immediately
- ask him to speak Russian. I asked him if he, at any time, resented
- that. He said "no". He also said when he was little, he thought
- all kids speak English outside and speak Russian at home. For him,
- that was just the fact of life. By the time he was old enough to
- realize that's not true, he was also old enough to not mind using
- two lauguages. Now that he's grown, he really appreciates his dad's
- effort. However, he does admit his vocabulary is more of the "kitchen
- talk" variety.
