- I believe Third Century is an equity fund, not a money market fund. You might
- check out the Calvert group. The whole fund group is supposedly into SRI (tm)
- (Socially Responsible Investing). They do have money maket funds.

- Personally, I would put your money where it will earn the most and then if
- you want, donate the difference between what it will earn in, say, Vanguard
- Money Market Prime, and Working Assets, to your favorite charity. IMHO,
- the failure of an SRI fund to invest in Mean and Nasty Corp has next to no
- effect on anybody but the investor. As long as MNC can continue to make
- money hand over fist doing whatever it does, there will be investors lining
- up to buy it. Proponents of SRI argue that eventually the virtue of "good"
- companies will be realized in the market. The costs of being good should
- eventually outweigh the costs of being bad. Well, maybe that day will come.
- Until it does, you will have more positive effect by investing for the highest
- return, wherever that may be, and donating your time/money to a worthy
- cause. If it makes YOU feel better to know you are not investing in MNC
- and it's ilk, that just dandy, but that doesn't make it a good investment, and
- that doesn't mean diddly to MNC either.
-
- BTW - I think SRI makes the least sense in a money market fund. The
- virtues of good corporate behavior are much less likely to affect short term
- debt than they are a company's stock price or bond rating.
-
- Being a "social" investor isn't easy. If you insist on being a purist, you should
- probably get a SRI-oriented full service broker and buy individual securities.
- A mutual fund has free rein to buy things that might upset you, yes, even an
- SRI fund. For example, are Waste Management, Chemical Waste Management,
- and Browning Ferris socially responsible companies or pariahs? Depends on
- who you ask. Even if you buy individual securities, be prepared to unload
- quick if the company makes a mistake or turns out to be not as "good" as you
- thought.
