  23. NICARAGUAN BISHOPS WARN OF DISENCHANTEMENT WITH NEW GOVERNMENT

  25. The Nicaraguan Bishops Conference issued a pastoral letter
  26. in which it said that "in light of the difficult situation of
  27. poverty, corruption and social deterioration which the country is
  28. experiencing," there is a disenchantment and lack of confidence
  29. in the "model of democracy which was sold to the people to
  30. replace Sandinism."  Nicaraguan Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo
  31. urged the government and politicians to come up with a
  32. satisfactory solution to the problems of "this poor Nicaraguan
  33. people. At this time we must dispense with egoism and personal
  34. or party interests and think of the well-being of the poor
  35. Nicaraguan people."

  37. Obando y Bravo said it was necessary to have a dialogue between
  38. the highest levels of government and advesary politicians, and
  39. that not only the government but the private sector as well must
  40. contribute to finding a solution to the high unemployment rate.
  41. For this, however, there must be stability in the country, in
