- Nica: Bishops Warn of Disenchantment
-

- NICARAGUAN BISHOPS WARN OF DISENCHANTEMENT WITH NEW GOVERNMENT
-
- The Nicaraguan Bishops Conference issued a pastoral letter
- in which it said that "in light of the difficult situation of
- poverty, corruption and social deterioration which the country is
- experiencing," there is a disenchantment and lack of confidence
- in the "model of democracy which was sold to the people to
- replace Sandinism." Nicaraguan Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo
- urged the government and politicians to come up with a
- satisfactory solution to the problems of "this poor Nicaraguan
- people. At this time we must dispense with egoism and personal
- or party interests and think of the well-being of the poor
- Nicaraguan people."
-
- Obando y Bravo said it was necessary to have a dialogue between
- the highest levels of government and advesary politicians, and
- that not only the government but the private sector as well must
- contribute to finding a solution to the high unemployment rate.
- For this, however, there must be stability in the country, in
- order for there to be investment in the country. (AP 11/20)
