- NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL VOTES IN FAVOR OF AMNESTY RESOLUTION
-
- byline Carmen S. Nieves
-
- In a 36-9 vote, with two abstentions, the New York City Council
- voted in favor of a resolution to ask the United Nations to press
- the US government to give amnesty to all Puerto Rican political
- prisoners in US jails. The Resolution, number 617-A, says in part
- that the United Nations Committee on Decolonization has listened
- to testimony regarding the persecution, harrassment and
- imprisonment of Puerto Ricans who have supported Puerto Rican
- independence from the United States.
-
- The resolution was sponosred by Council member Jose Rivera. Mr.
- Rivera said the next step must be taken by the Puerto Rican
- representatives in the US congress to demand that the political
- prisoners be released.
-
- Carlos Pineiro, a Puerto Rican political activist, initiated the
- resolution. He was unable to attend the session in which the vote
- was taken, due to illness. However, his efforts were acknowledged
- by Franklyn Flores.
