  24. NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL VOTES IN FAVOR OF AMNESTY RESOLUTION

  28. In a 36-9 vote, with two abstentions, the New York City Council
  29. voted in favor of a resolution to ask the United Nations to press
  30. the US government to give amnesty to all Puerto Rican political
  31. prisoners in US jails. The Resolution, number 617-A, says in part
  32. that the United Nations Committee on Decolonization has listened
  33. to testimony regarding the persecution, harrassment and
  34. imprisonment of Puerto Ricans who have supported Puerto Rican
  35. independence from the United States.

  37. The resolution was sponosred by Council member Jose Rivera. Mr.
  38. Rivera said the next step must be taken by the Puerto Rican
  39. representatives in the US congress to demand that the political
  40. prisoners be released.

  42. Carlos Pineiro, a Puerto Rican political activist, initiated the
  43. resolution. He was unable to attend the session in which the vote
  44. was taken, due to illness. However, his efforts were acknowledged
  45. by Franklyn Flores.
