- TAIWAN
- Taiwan has signed a contract to buy 60 French-made Mirage-2000 war
- planes in a deal worth nearly $4 billion. The contract was signed
- in Taipei by Taiwan's air force authorities, representatives of the
- French plane makers, and French companies supplying missiles and
- engines to the planes.

- Taiwan last week signed a contract worth almost $6 billion with the
- US to buy 150 F-16 war planes.

- China has already protested about both deals, saying relations with
- the US and France would be affected with a strong reaction from the

- MALAYSIA
- A tanker carrying 1,200 tons of asphalt has sunk in the South
- China Sea, threatening Malaysian with a second pollution disaster
- in two months.

- The Honduran-registered Marvin I had been damaged badly 35 nautical
- miles off a Malaysian coast Nov 14. Officials are not sure why the
- ship eventually sank on its voyage from Singapore to Bangkok.

- The eight thai crewmen were rescued by a passing Thai fishing boat.
- A Malaysian air force plane reported two oil slicks after the
- Marvin sank. Asphalt is a heavy petroleum-based tar used to surface
