- WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 -- Leading environmental and consumer
- organizations endorsing the so-called Gas Guzzler Campaign
- at a press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. in the
- Zenger Room of the National Press Club said they would also
- release the text of a letter to President-elect Clinton urging
- the new administration to raise the current 27.5 miles per gallon
- federal fuel efficiency standard for new cars.
- The organizations said that this could be accomplished by
- executive order of the new president.
- The Gas Guzzler Campaign is an effort by about 100 consumer,
- environmental and community-based organizations to inform citizens
- about how their vehicle choices and driving habits contribute to
- environmental problems and health concerns.
- Participating in the Tuesday press conference are David Cohen,
- head of the Advocacy Institute; Joan Claybrook, president of
- Public Citizen; Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety; and
- Jeremy Rifkin, head of the Greenhouse Crisis Foundation.
