- This message was from ROBERT BRAULT to ALL EDUCATORS,
- and was forwarded to you by PETER MACINNIS.

- Just in case you missed this one! No need to acknowledge, but it might
- be fun to try. BTW, I've been naughty and used high stuff in the past:
- has it flashed back at you?

- THE INFAMOUS ASCII EXPERIMENT
-
- I have asked for one channel for a week experiment of the so-called
- "high bit ASCII", wich in fact refers to ASCII characters above number 127. If
- someone is not familiar with ASCII characters, let's just say that each
- character on our keyboard (letters, numbers and other characters) have all a
- distinct number for your computer. All brands of computers have established a
- standard for the first 127th characters whereas any computer will "see" a "i"
- wether someone reads with a MAC, an IBM, an Atari, etc...
-
- Such is not the case for other characters wich number is above 127 in
- the ASCII table: these characters are the special letters used in languages
- other than english, like certain accents on letters in french, spanish, etc...
- Since there is no "standard" for these characters someone with an IBM
- compatible might see the french letter "e" with a small / over it as that
- particular letter, but a MAC person could see a graphical symbol and an Atari
- person could see a greek letter.
-
- This experiment will be done in only one channel wich will be CHANNEL
- 4 and will last for 1 WEEK: from December 4th to December 13th 1992 wich gives
- us 1 full week and 2 weekends. This experiment will carry, on the above
- mentioned channel, messages written in french, spanish and german with all the
- usual signs these languages carry with them.
-
- This is done to "test" our K12 "network" on how the different boards
- (both FidoNet, InterNet and OtherNet) deal with these special characters and
- to check if it's possible to allow "high bit characters" in message sections
- of K12Net in the future; i'm thinking specially here about the linguistic
- message sections and maybe (if everything goes right) in other areas of K12.
-
- Now to check this, your particular bbs software needs to be modified
- as to allow "high bit characters" to "pass tru" your system.
-
- ***************************************************************************
- * ATTENTION SYSOPS *
- * *
- * Could you please modify you bbs software to allow "high bit *
- * characters on CHANNEL 4 from December 4th to December 13th *
- * *
- * THANK YOU *
- ***************************************************************************
-
- I can tell Maximus Sysops how to do this and if other sysops using
- other software know how to do it on their own software, please feel free to
- mention to others how it is done.
-
- FOR MAXIMUS SYSOPS: In your MsgArea.Ctl file (it might be also
- Areas.Ctl file) go to the Channel 4 section and add the following line
- High Bit Allowed with your popular editor. Save these changes and don't
- forget to run SILT on your modified MsgArea.Ctl file.
-
- Thank you,
-
