- On X servers getting bigger and smaller...

-
- Hmm, I wrote a malloc() like that once, too, because I was getting memory
- leaks in my text retrieval package simply because of a poor realloc().
-
- On the X server topic, note that Sun's OpenWindows 3 xnews server *does*
- get smaller from time to time. I am not sure what it's doing, though. It
- might be using shared memory segments. It certainly uses mmap() sometimes.
- At any rate, destroying a NeWS canvas returns the memory pretty much
- immediately. Try using pageview, setting the resolution to 150 dpi (say),
- and turning antialiasing on (use Edit->Properties, then Apply), then see how
- big xnews is. Then quit pageview, wait a minute, and see how much smaller
- the server just got.
-
- The window server that came with out DECStation, under Ultrix, grows to
- about 9 megabytes if you have two XTerms, a window manager (olvwm or mwm)
- and no other clients. Pretty wild, especially when the machine has only
- 16 MBytes of RAM.
-
- It's a shame Sun are dropping xnews - there are a lot of relatively
- sophisicated features in it, and I don't imagine they'll migrate into X11.
