- We are using conditional text to write a manual that applies
- to two versions of a software product, and when we generate
- the book these messages about "Inconsistent..." this or that
- are really spoiling my sleep. Fortunately you can shut the
- critters off and there are no visible bad effects, but darn it
- I want to *fix* their causes and I can't *find* them!
-
- Take this one little one-page component of the book. It contains
- just two tags, named `5.0' and `6.0' respectively. I have
- saved the file as MIF to verify that
-
- * tag 5.0 has no format overrides
- * tag 6.0 has color As-is and style StrikeThrough
-
- I set the Show/Hide settings to "Show all."
- I select the option "Use Format Overrides."
-
- Everything looks fine; there are exactly four uses of conditional
- text, two of each tag, they don't overlap (I checked in the MIF
- to make sure), and they display fine.
-
- I generate the book, I get an alert
-
- Format override is inconsistent for tag `6.0' in <document>
-
- So I set the Show/Hide settings to turn off "Use Format Overrides"
- and generate again; now I get the alert
-
- Format override setting for <document> is inconsistent.
-
- Inconsistent with bloody WHAT!!!! I scream at the terminal,
- and subside, panting...must remember not to get so *involved*
- with this thing...
-
- I cannot for the life of me figure out what we have done to deserve
- these messages. I have even tried making all `6.0' text unconditional,
- so only the tag existed, no text (yes, I checked the master pages!)
- and STILL the damned messages came out. The only way I can make the
- message stop is to delete the condition tag entirely! Help my sanity,
- tell me what I've overlooked?
