- I'm considering buying a 3800HD laptop, these are my comments and
- questions.
-
- Of the "high-power" laptops Tandy puts out now, this one is the only
- one thad isn't hinged right along the back case. This machine very
- much reminds me of a black-cased, souped-up 1100FD (I have one that
- I like, actually). On the other hand, the screen looks "flattened"
- compared to many other laptops... I haven't actually measured it,
- but it does give that perception. Comments ?
-
- Another observation is that with four different high-end machines on
- sale - two carried over from the last flyer and all four on sale until
- Christmas - that I expect a new set of machines to be released soon.
- Yes ? No ? Speculations ?
-
- The 3800HD, with the Cyrix 486sx20-compatible processor, is signif-
- icantly less expensive than other high-end machines. Has anyone run
- across any compatibility problems ? I'm getting the machine to run
- Windows, Visual Basic (DOS and Windows versions), and Procomm Plus -
- but nothing that I'd consider very processor or disk-intensive. Is
- 4MB the limit for this machine ?
-
- I noticed that the 4800HD, with a "real 486sx20" isn't much more expensive,
- although if I buy a different brand I could probably save some $$$. Is
- the price savings worth it for the non-intel processor and the perceived
- smaller screen ?
-
- The salesperson that answered my questions the first day was EXTREMELY
- helpful. He didn't try to snow me, admitted he didn't know when he
- didn't, got the box and manual out of the back room, etc. If I buy one
- I plan on buying it from him.
-
- I can't say the same for his manager. I went in to look at the machine
- again (I was ready to buy if the salesperson that had helped me the first
- time had been there, but he wasn't). I looked at it again, asked one
- or two questions, and got what I've unfortunately come to consider typical
- treatment - bluffs, "Tandy's better" and some not-completely-accurate
- reasons why, statements that "bad things would happen" if I put non-Tandy
- upgrade RAM into the machine, the whole crock. But not so much whether
- he was right or wrong, but his condescending attitude towards me really
- bothered me. I almost wrote the machine off because of him.
-
- So, is anyone out there happy - or unhappy - with Tandy's 3800HD machine ?
- I asked about them in comp.sys.laptops and didn't get any response at all.
