- I just installed a Micropolis 1558-15 ESDI hard drive into a Sun
- shoebox and am trying to install SunOS. My problem is with format.
- I invoke format, specify drive and drive type, enter the defect
- list (I think I'm doing this right) and then run format. Here's
- the info/error messages echoed to the screen:
- format> format
- Ready to format. Formatting cannot be interrupted
- and takes 11 minutes(estimated). Continue? y
- Beginning format. The current time is......

- Is this an operator, a software or a hardware error? How do I
- correct it? The system is a Sun 3/60 and the OS version is
- 4.1.1. I also tried 4.0.3 with the same results. The drive is not
- new and may have been used in a PC. The system was working fine
- with a Micropolis 1355 just before the switch. The jumpers on the
- 1558 are for hard sectoring, drive select 1, spin-up with power on,
- and 35 sectors, 512 bytes/sector(formatted) and 595 bytes/sector
- (unformatted).
-
- Thanks...Phil.
