- Highland Logic's Fault Tolerant SPARC project has been suspended due to
- the collapse of it's latest financing arrangements with Shared
- Investment Ltd. and ISR Holdings.
-
- The project was conceived and financed by Robert Reid, the architect
- and patent holder of the STRATUS Fault Tolerant computer system. After
- three years of design and simulation work, Highland Logic is ready to
- manufacture a refined hardware fault tolerant design, fully compatible
- with the Sun Microsystems line of computers. Unfortunately, three
- separate attempts to finance the manufacture have collapsed and
- Highland Logic is no longer able to finance operations.
-
- Technically the project has gone from strength to strength, and has had
- good non-financial support from Sun Microsystems. The inability to
- secure a business package has been primarily due to:
-
- 1) The Australian IT industries reluctance to provide seed capital to
- local projects with any degree of risk.
-
- 2) The world IT industries lack of interest in investing in the Australian
- IT industry when Australian companies will only commit to second
- round funding.
-
- 3) The Australian Government's refusal to assist with seed capital unless
- a commercial financial structure is already in place.
-
- 4) The lack of a world-wide marketing structure for Australian IT products.
-
- All indications are that there exists a good market for the product and
- that the UNIX & SPARC communities requires a low cost hardware Fault
- Tolerant solution.
-
- As Highland Logic has exhausted its avenues for additional funding, we
- publicly invite any offers to continue this project in any form.
