I have heard of disappearing files and folders. Has anyone reported files
which mysteriously appear in folders.
On Tuesday 11th of November at 23.56 when the PowerBook 170 was on
but unattended, a file has appeared within a folder. I only disovered it
three days later after I had given my PowerBook to the Apple
Dealer to change my 40 MB Hard Drive to a 120 MB Hard Drive.
The Apple dealer transferred all my data from the smaller hard drive
to the larger one. I have not checked whether the file is on the old hard drive,
but I guess it must be.
The file has only a name, and a very clear and shocking one at that. However,
for purposes of this scientific discussion I shall not now reveal the name of
the file. The file shows as a document having zero K size. I tried to open it
and I was asked whether I wanted to open it using Teach Text. This I did and
found the file to be totally empty.
I used CanOpener and Compact Pro to determine the type of file it was.
Both indicated that it was a TEXT/MACA file. I do not think that I have any
text programme on my hard disk which is described as MACA and I do not
know what text program it represents.
Only my wife and I live at home. No one else has access to this computer. My
modem works but there is no remote access facility to the PowerBook. My
wife does not know how to handle the computer so she can be ruled out as
having created the file. I certainly did not create this file.
I would like to know how a file could have been created and found itself in a
folder far removed from the folder containing my communications software. No one has ever tried to ftp into my PowerBook and I do no think it is possible as I do not have any sophisticated communication program.
Any explanations please - and then I will reveal the startling name of the file along with a summary of the responses.
