- There seem to have been some problems with the last two attempts to
- post the latest revision of the FAQ for comp.sys.mac.apps, comp.sys.mac.system,
- and comp.sys.mac.misc. These were probably caused by my efforts to get the FAQ
- posted in news.answers as well. I am trying to resolve them. In the meantime
- the current revision of the FAQ, 1.16, can be ftp'd from rascal.ics.utexas.edu
- in the directory /mac/faq as general.FAQ_1.16 and from sumex in the directory
- info-mac/report where it's named csm-faq.txt.
-
- Changes from the previous version (which shouldn't have expired yet
- unless your news software is broken) are as follows:
-
- Question 1.0 I have a question...
- Due to what has subjectively seemed like an increasing number
- of posts in the Mac newsgroups which violate basic netiquette, a
- pointer to the information in news.announce.newusers has been
- added.
-
- Question 1.1 What other information is available?
- The contents of the report directory at sumex has been updated.
-
- Question 2.0 Why is my system taking up so much memory?
- Maxima allows addressing use of fourteen megs of real RAM under
- System 6 as well as providing a RAM disk for any memory beyond that
- limit.
-
- Question 3.1 Where can I ftp Mac software?
- ftp.irisa.fr no longer mirrors sumex or carries any other Macintosh
- software. Two Swedish archives, sics.se and lth.se, have been added.
- If anyone knows of a non-Scandinavian, continental site to replace
- ftp.irisa.fr I'd like to hear of it.
- Since Mike Gleason is no longer maintaining his mac.ftp.list, it
- has been dropped from this section.
-
- Question 3.5 What is .bin? .hqx? .cpt? .etc.?
- StuffIt 3.01 is now StuffIt 3.0.1 and may be 3.0.3 by the time
- you read this.
-
- Question 9.1
- Disk First Aid 7.1 can reportedly cure the disappearing folders
- bug.
-
- Question 11.6 What is Autodoubler? Is it safe?
- The problem with Find File in Word 5.0 has been corrected
- in Word 5.1.
-
- Question 11.7 How does Autodoubler compare to More Disk Space?
- StuffIt SpaceSaver has finally arrived. I should have had a chance
- to install and evaluate it by the next release of this FAQ.
