-
- I used AutoDoubler for a while; since version 1.04 or so (the current is
- 1.07). I liked it at first, but the problems nagged at me for a long time,
- and I shelled out for Times Two the other day (details to follow).
-
- AutoDoubler worked well under the best of circumstances, but too often
- circumstances weren't perfect. The Labels which told it which files to
- ignore would disappear, or the program would elect to ignore them.
- It would balk at running with File Sharing on, and so on. Problems were
- generally solvable by reinstalling the program, but if you forgot to tell
- the new copy to ignore certain files, they would get nailed again.
-
- The worst parts was that the drive became essentially unusable without
- AutoDoubler turned on. Aliases to AutoDoubled items behaved bizarrely,
- it at all, and running a compressed program would not decompress all its
- associated modules/files, resulting in crippled performace unless you went
- back by hand and decompressed the necessary things.
-
- It worked, but was a bit of a drag.
-
- TimesTwo is a compressing disk driver. Everything written to your hard drive
- is compressed, everything read from it is decompressed. Because this is
- driver-level, it requires no init and compresses everything written to the
- drive. If you install it on a removable hard drive and mount the drive on
- a new computer, it still works.
-
- Problems? It's brand new and untested. Otherwise, I like it much better than
- AutoDoubler.
