- BOB'S EYES PRO version 2.0.2 Nov 13, 1992
- #
- This little application shows several windows (up to eight) each one with
- two eyes looking curiously at your pointer. They have their own ``life''.
- They are designed to work in the background under system 6 with MultiFinder
- on or System 7 and later.
- It is a kind of X-Eyes for the Macintosh Operating System, but try them
- both on a Mac running A/UX and compare !!!
- SOURCES ARE INCLUDED. (for those of you who want to learn how NOT to
- write macintosh applications).
- #
- Now Bob's Eyes Pro is Free Software distributed under the GNU GPL version 2
- or later. I retain the copyright anyway. Using/Copying it means accepting
- the terms of the GNU GPL. Read the files READ-ME, COPYING and COPYING-LIBRARY
- included with this distribution CAREFULLY.
- Anyway if you like it, feel free to send me a postcard (I *REALLY* WOULD
- LIKE IT !!!), to tell me you appreciated it. However you are not morally
- obliged to.
- Please report to me any enhancement you have made.
- Version 2.0.2 corrects menus, and legal stuff from version 2.0.1, other
- than some info about contacting me (things have changed).

-
- >Anyway, Compact Pro is a very nice program, I agree; but the versions of
- >StuffIt that LJONES used for his "test" are not the latest versions, so the
- >test doesn't seem to me either fair or useful.
-
- My results were not meant to constitute a test. I was just using what was
- on my hard drive. I downloaded Stuffit Lite today and you're right, SL did
- produce a smaller archive (about 118K).
- My point, however, was that I used the Stuffit 1.5.1 format because
- it is the most widely supported, not because it was smallest, which it clearly
- was not.
- The advantages of the 1.5.1 format are several:
-
- *widely supported by numerous copies of Stuffit 1.5.1, Classic, Deluxe, etc.
- *automatically unstuffed by Fetch, Downline, etc.
- *supported by Compact Pro, so CP users never have to leave CP
-
- What I'm getting at is this: if the difference in the size of archives
- created by different compression schemes is small (less than 7% in this case),
- is it acceptable to use the most convenient format? While Stuffit Deluxe/Lite
- may indeed be more efficient, they are the least widely distributed shareware
- formats, and thus cause inconvenience. And remember, I am a Compact Pro fan,
- but I uploaded in Stuffit 1.5.1 format because I thought it would be most
- convenient for everyone- Compact Pro and Stuffit users alike.
- I'll leave this question up to the net, and abide by its decision. I want
- what's best for everyone.

- Try either:
- 1) Using the 'hand-feed' option. (The driver will ask you to insert
- "the next sheet" for each page)
-
- - OR -
-
- 2) Put only one sheet of paper in the paper tray. (The driver will

- While clunky, one or the other of these should work.

-
- So, I'm again in the market for large displays for the Mac IIcx. We
- predominately do wide spreadsheet work here, so color isn't *necessary*
- (although it would be nice). I would just like *something* that can
- display an 8.5x11 page in landscape orientation.

-
- If you really want pages 1 and 2 side by side, then all you need is a
- modified LaserWriter driver that does N-Up printing. This is available for
- free by using the software:
-
- info-mac/util/dmm-lw-56-stuff-131.hqx (for LaserWriter 5 and 6)
- info-mac/util/dmm-lw-7-stuff-131.hqx (for LaserWriter 7)
-
- However, if you intend to fold this thing, the numbers will be much
- different. For example, say you have a 16 page booklet that is printed
- double sided. The first sheet would have pages 1 and 16 on one side and
- pages 2 and 15 on the other side.
-

- Solutions I've tried? Deleting the Preferences file and restarting,

- Thanks for your effort and the degree of consideration, which has
- not escaped my attention. I wish that more among those submitting
- files to public archives would adopt such human-oriented approach.
- Sadly, most people never think beyond the fact that there is more
- to archive formats than mere compression data-efficiency. Whether
- we like it or not, the Stuffit 1.5.1, although not the most
- efficient, is the ONLY **open**, and the most widely-spread,
- format of those currently in use on the Mac. That means, among
- other things, that it ought to be considered "efficient enough"
- for most public-archiving uses. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
-
-
- > I'd like
- > to see more communications software support Compact Pro, since it
- > has a better interface (IMHO) and often creates smaller archives.
-
- I agree with you that CompactPro is probably be a better choice
- for personal (offline) archiving, for a variety of reasons. Still,
- it is a proprietary, undisclosed format, which has thus far
- prevented people from writing of online (unix/VMS etc) dearchiving
- tools for it. Indeed, the only Mac-native-compression format for
- which such tools exist today is the Stuffit 1.5.1, the grandson of
- it all (the granddaddy being PackIt! I guess ;-)). They are the
- mcvert, sit and unsit -- for binhexing/debinhexing, stuffing
- (yes! that too) and listing/ whole/ selective unstuffing from
- SIT!-type files respectively. Such extracted files may then
- easily be downloaded in binary state with ZTerm or other MacBinary-
- cognizant tools.
-
- Sadly, the freeware MacCompress 3.2, written by Lloyd Chambers
- (later author of the DiskDoubler and co-author of the AD), in my
- view superior because of its Unix compatibility, has thus far not
- achieved any significant spread in Macdom.
-
-
- Taken as a whole I'd venture to say that IF final compressed size
- of something to be sent to a public archive is of AN ISSUE (i.e.
- there is _significant_ difference between usage of some "better"
- format and that of Stuffit 1.5.1) then the most OPTIMAL choice
- of a method would be to:
-
- (a) make sure your still-uncompressed file(s) will fit on 800K
- floppies -- not everybody has a SuperDrive and there is seldom
- a reason why files larger than couldn't be split into smaller
- chunks (max. size 770K) [see more about it at end].
-
- (b) compress all such files using the CompactPro application.
- After Stuffit 1.5.1 it is, probably, the SECOND most-widely spread
- Mac-compression format. Remember your shareware payment! ;-))
-
- (c) now CREATE a Stuffit 1.5.1 archive (NOT Deluxe!) and add those
- already-compressed files there WITHOUT any further compression
- (there is a setting for that in the Prefs box). This will add a
- 22-byte header to all files inside BUT permit having an integral
- README text and otherwise make that --now nominally Stuffit-- file
- EASY to list and/or extract from online after debinhexing with the
- mcvert program. All that AND max efficiency during transport!
-
- Let's face it... what's a 22-byte overhead when the result
- will defacto be so much easier to list/extract and process by
- end-users elsewhere?
-

- Addendum: a **FLAME**, my public first... Ken Fisher, hit "n" now;
- you don't want to read it (it's easier to adopt the ostrich
- position):
-
- A recently to sumex resubmitted stack-collection of Frederic
- Rinaldi's XCMDs, version 2.0, in themselves each hardly ever over
- 20K in size, will not even permit me to view what's inside it, much
- less to open it onto an 800K-floppy. On top of that, the DD SEA
- format used by Ken has severe problems... following the unsuccessful
- attempt to open it onto a floppy, it has now became unreadable...
- another 400-odd KB downloaded to no avail. I _did_ mention that
- problem with DD SEA and final archive sizes to Ken after his
- previous submission in the spring and asked him to choose some
- other method next time around. He agreed with me then but chose
- to disregarded that now.

- Subject: Quadra 950
-
- I hope I am sending this the right way!
-
- I am trying to get a Quadra 950 working on Ethernet.
-
- Here is the situation. The Quadra can receive data over the network OK (20 to
- 40 seconds for a 1.5 meg file, same as my IICI). However it takes the Quadra
- 6
- to 15 MINUTES to transmit that same file! (The CI can transmit that file in 20
- to 40 seconds).
-
- Times are taken from dragging the file from the local hard drive to the
- remote,
- and vice versa.
-
- The Quadra has alternately been an Appleshare 3.0 server, an Appleshare client
- and an NFS client. In ALL cases the quadra reads that data at a 'reasonable'
- rate, and in all cases transmits the data extremely slowly. The IICI works
- fine on the same network connection. This looks to me like the Quadra is
- incapable of transmitting data efficiently over ethernet! (no inits). Is
- someone running a Quadra 950 on Ethernet who can prove me wrong? (Perhaps I
- should add that the Quadra seems to perform reasonably on localtalk - this is
- only an Ethernet problem. BTW - all phase 2 ethernet)
-
- My vendor has replaced the Asante friendly net adapter, the system board and
- the memory. They are stumped and have no idea what is wrong. They even
- tested
- the network ports that we have tested the Quadra on to make sure that the
- problem was not in my network.
-
- I have been trying to get help from Apple's direct support numbers - however
- they are refusing to return my calls - the last I heard was that this was a
- programming/engineering problem (I was working with the Appleshare support
- group).
-
- My vendor has contacted Apples technical departments directly (they copy me on
- all the applelinks) and Apple has not been able to respond to them in any
- meaningful way (though Apple was only contacted last week by the vendor. I
- have been working with Apple support since JULY with no response).
-
- I have checked some of the local apple users in my area, no one is using a 950
- on ethernet. However the Quadra owners have all warned me that the Quadra is
- a
- problem machine on networks.
-
- The Quadra is running System 7.0.1, tuneup 1.1.1, Appletalk 57.0.4. It has 8
- megs of RAM and a Quantum hard drive (100 lps). It is using an Asante
- Friendly
- net adapter to make the connection to our 10baseT ethernet network.

- I would certainly appreciate any information anyone can give me. Feel free to
- email me directly at 76436.2003@@compuserve.com. I will submit a

- of all information I receive in a week or so.
-
- I really hope that my suspecion of Apple (that they shipped a product with

- I was a test site for SAM 3.5, and one of the original members of
- the Disinfectant Working Group, so I don't have any biases here...
-
- The are only two reasons (IMHO) that SAM 3.5 would be worthwhile to
- upgrade to from Disinfectant are: 1) support for Apple events (of course, if
- you are still in the dark ages of System 6, that won't do you any good) and
- 2) the ability to scan for viruses in StuffIt & Compact Pro archives.
-
- On the other hand, I think the SAM interface is TOO gray for my
- tastes (if I had wanted a NeXT, I would have bought one ;), but it is much
- improved from previous versions.

- Subject: Selling older software versions - more comments
-
- In my original posting, I said that you buy the rights to use the
- program when you "buy" a program. Phil Ryan had some question then
- about the upgrades. As I understand it, when you buy the program
- you buy the rights to use the program with its CURRENT features.
- Therefore, if an upgrade comes out that includes new features
- you do not have the right to run it because of the new features.
- You must "buy" the right to use the new features. This would
- also be consistant with a "bug fix". In theory, there should be
- no new features in a "bug fix" therefore you should not have to
- "buy" the rights to use it. Another way to look at a "bug fix" is
- that you were sold a defective product and the manufacture has
- an obligation to fix it. You were sold the rights to use a program
- that had certain features, but due to a "bug" one of thos features
- was not available to you, therefore you are not able to exercise
- full rights that you bought.
- The reason the upgrade prices are lower that the original prices
- can be attributed to the fact that you already paid for the right to
- use the program with a certain set of features. The amount that you
- pay for the upgrade, gives you the right to add the new features to
- the features you could already use. But then again the software
- company may just give you a good price on the program because they
- realize that you are not going to pay the same price you originally
- paid just to get some new features.
-
- I like Alex Hopmann's comparision to Apple's logic board upgrades.
- However, it is not really the same. I believe that you may be able
- to keep the old system board. However the price will go up. I think
- that the dealer gets reimbursed for sending in the old board. Therefore,
- I think you could pay about twice the sum that is listed for the
- upgrade but keep the old board, but at that point you may as well
- go and buy a new computer. I also reserve the privilage to be wrong!
-
- Another comment. Alex also mentions competive upgrades. I do not
- believe that you transfer your rights to the other company. As I
- understand it the company is selling you a new copy of their program
- in hopes that they can bite into their competitors market share. They
- are hoping that after you use their program you will switch. They are
- not "buying" your rights to your original program, but selling
- you additional rights.
-
- And after all this, if you are still confused, go back to semantics
- (this coming from an engineer :-). You have a software LICENSE.
- A license means you are granted certain privilages. If you have
- a driver's license, it means you have been granted the privilage
- to drive a car (and as my driver's ed instructor used to say "Driving
- IS a privilage, not a right." ;-). Therefore, when you buy the
- software package, you are in reality buying the license not the
- program. That is another reason the logic board upgrade does not
- hit directly on the bullseye (pretty darn close though). When
- you bought your computer you did not buy the right to use it,
- you bought the physical item. It is yours. Apple has no legal
- to enter your home and take it away. But if you violate a software
- license, the software company can legally take away your right to
- use the program. They can not take away the disks or the manuals
- but can force you to erase ALL copies of the program including the
- copy that came on the original disks. But enough of my preaching! ;-)
-
- Now it comes time for the good ol' disclaimer! Since I am not
- a lawyer, but just a dumb ol' engineer, I claim the right and
- privilage to be wrong in all legal matters. But I should be
- able to design a structure for you! ;-)

- Subject: Trouble downloading from ftp.apple.com
-
- Howdy y'all,
-
- I'm having trouble downloading software from the ftp.apple.com site. Here's
- what I do:
-
- Using MacKermit 0.99(97), I log in to the VAX here at school. (I just plug
- one
- of the serial cables that would ordinarily go to a terminal into the serial
- port of the Mac.)
-
- I then TELNET to my account at Worcester PolyTech (my VAX account has a quota
- of only 512 k (grumble, grumble)). From there, I connect via ftp to
- ftp.apple.com and 'get' what I want.
-
- Then I disconnect from ftp.apple.com and start Kermit. I send the files, and
- then go to the MacKermit menu and select "Receive files." An hour or two
- later, it tells me it's done.
-
- I start up StuffIt Lite and choose "Decode BinHex 4." StuffIt grinds away for
- a minute and then tells me, "Resource fork may be damaged - use this file with
- caution," followed by, "Data fork may be damaged - use this file with
- caution."
-
- At this point I know I've wasted the past hour or so, because even if StuffIt
- can then open the archive and unstuff the image, DiskCopy always informs me
- that the checksums don't match and the file is corrupted.
-
- Now, this doesn't happen with all the files I try to get. What I'm after is
- all the "System 7.0 for 800k disks" image files. I got Fonts, Tidbits, and
- Disk Tools (after about 3 tries each - quite a while, even at 9600), but then
- I
- tried "install-1-image.hqx" and kept failing.
-
- Is it possible that the original file is corrupt? I don't think so, because
- the same thing happened the first few times I tried to download the image
- files
- for Fonts, Tidbits, and Disk Tools, but they all eventually worked.
-
- Am I missing a step here? Overlooking something? Or perhaps you don't have a
- solution but could, maybe, tell me why it's happening. In any case, SEND
- HELP!
-
- I am not subscribed to the list (remember, my cheesy VAX account quota is only
- 512 k, and the mailer at the WPI machine is all screwed up) so please respond
- directly to SSA92FAJ12@RCNVMS.RCN.MASS.EDU and I will summarize to the list if
- there is interest.
