- Changes:
-
- Some changes in the header to make this file eligible for posting
- in news.answers.
-
- Question 1.0 I have a question...
- Due to what has subjectively seemed like an increasing number
- of posts in the Mac newsgroups which violate basic netiquette, a
- pointer to the information in news.announce.newusers has been
- added.
-
- Question 1.1 What other information is available?
- The contents of the report directory at sumex has been updated.
-
- Question 2.0 Why is my system taking up so much memory?
- Maxima allows addressing use of fourteen megs of real RAM under
- System 6 as well as providing a RAM disk for any memory beyond that
- limit.
-
- Question 3.1 Where can I ftp Mac software?
- ftp.irisa.fr no longer mirrors sumex or carries any other Macintosh
- software. Two Swedish archives, sics.se and lth.se, have been added.
- If anyone knows of a non-Scandinavian, continental site to replace
- ftp.irisa.fr I'd like to hear of it.
- Since Mike Gleason is no longer maintaining his mac.ftp.list, it
- has been dropped from this section.
-
- Question 3.5 What is .bin? .hqx? .cpt? .etc.?
- StuffIt 3.01 is now StuffIt 3.0.1 and may be 3.0.3 by the time
- you read this.
-
- Question 9.1
- Disk First Aid 7.1 can reportedly cure the disappearing folders
- bug.
-
- Question 11.6 What is Autodoubler? Is it safe?
- The problem with Find File in Word 5.0 has been corrected
- in Word 5.1.
-
- Question 11.7 How does Autodoubler compare to More Disk Space?
- StuffIt SpaceSaver has finally arrived. I should have had a
- to install and evaluate it by the next release of this FAQ.

-
-
- Yes, I had the same mysterious (and qute unhelpful) message. I traced the
- problem down to MacTCP 1.1. If you have this, you will need to upgrade to
- MacTCP 1.1.1 in order to use virtual mem w/sys7.1. It is kinda irritating
- that
- the only two pieces of sys7.1-incopmpatible software I have found so far
- amongst my stuff are both Apple products... >:(
-
- Also, to 'repair' just the system file, boot from another disk (such as the
- Disk Tools disk) and drag your damaged system file to the trash. Replace it
- by
- dragging the System file from the Install (#1) disk. Make sure that you then
- drag the required fonts [Chicago, Geneva, and Monaco] from the Fonts disk
- either into the Fonts subfolder of your System Folder or into the System file
- itself. The 'raw' System file on the Install disk does not have them
- pre-installed. Although the Installer script does put these directly into the
- System file itself, I have found no problem with just putting them in the
- Fonts
- folder with the rest of my fonts.
-
- I hope this is helpful.

- From: Terence Mc Goff <terry%Kaitain.ucd.ie@Forsythe.Stanford.EDU>
- Subject: An open Letter to Apple
-
- I feel that the time has come for Apple users to speak out.
- As a dedicated Macintosh user for nearly nine years (I even have a LISA,
- I feel that Apple has finally flipped it. Apple owes more to its users
- than any other computer firm. We have consistently bought
- hardware that by any benchmark is vastly over-priced. Apple
- justified this for many years by saying that the cost of its
- machines was justified by the Operating System, the user
- interface, ease of use, power of graphics, and so on, and we agreed.
- But today, their machines are still over-priced, and Apple is now making
- a determined attempt to screw their established user base
- (the people that have pushed Macs for years for free for Apple)
- by charging for The new Operating System (7.1).
-
- Apple's argument about user interfaces is no longer valid.
- Windows 3.1 is an acceptable GUI, and now relies heavily on
- software developed originally for use on the Mac (Word for Windows, Excel,
- Quark, Pagemaker, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
- BUT you can get a 486 PC for a hell of a lot less money than
- a 68030 Mac without the math co-processor (not counting
- the Classic II, I'm talking about colour machines). Needless to
- say, the 486 is generally a lot faster. You can buy a low-end UNIX
- workstation for about $3000 now (about the price of a IIci
- system), that runs at about 40 MIPS, which blows away any Mac or
- PC, and the interface is getting better on these all the time.
-
- Apple is releasing brain-dead machines at prices higher than
- the machines they replace (IIvx vs. IIci), even though they are .
- a lot slower. They expect us to buy these things?
-
- Apple is upping the licence cost for MacTCP (from $2500 (once off)
- to $5000 per annum for commercial users, and something horrendous
- for educational institutions, not to mention developers),
- which will make the Internet community of Macintosh users suffer,
- as well as users of most Ethernet and Token-ring network users.
-
- As a Macintosh user, I think it is time to tell Apple to
- GET A GRIP!
- The free OS was always one of Apples selling points, and the well
- suppported architechture of software extensions was a rich feature of
- this.
-
- Macintosh has always attracted a remarkable loyalty among its
- users, and Apple is now doing its best to destroy this.
- Charging for OS updates is okay when there are 2000 different
- clones of the original platform, but when there is only one
- manufacturer and one OS, it strikes me as a further meanness
- on Apple's part to try to bleed its customers even more.
-
- As a dedicated reader of Info-Mac for the past four years,
- it seems to me that the list is composed of people who believe
- in the Macintosh. It is now the time to tell Apple that enough
- is enough. Apple will never overtake MS-DOS machines in the
- sales charts. Never. Shouldn't Apple take another look at
- its recent principles of operation and ask whether or not
- they're worth the TeachText document they're written in?
- Macintoshes have always sold themselves, and I think that
- Apples' open, user-loyal attitude in the past was
- one of the reasons for this. I dont want to see this change.
-
- I have watched with increasing frustration over the past year as
- Apple has dragged itself down to the level of a PC-clone maker.
- It has acquired an attitude best descibed as miserly.
-
- The Internet is a great forum for discussion and exchange of ideas,
- and if other people feel the same way as I do, perhaps we should
- let Apple know. Anyone have Scully's AppleLink address?
-
- Terry Mac Goff
-
- PS. I know that other manufacturers charge for OS updates, and for
- other networking and filesharing software, but that was one
- of the things that made Apple different, wasn't it?

-
- The bird of prey actually refers to Romulan vessela and was introduced on the
- orginal Star Trek series when Mark Lenard played a Romulan captain engaged in
- a
- cat-and-mouse hunt between the Enterprise and the Romulan vessel. The
- Romulan

- Many people may not know this, but a check doesn't have to have magnetic
- ink to be legal and valid. If I remember correctly, the only requirements
- for a legal check are:
-
- 1. Payor name
- 2. Payee name (must be a legal entity)
- 3. Amount in written and numeric form
- 4. Date
- 5. Signature of payor
- 6. Name and account number of financial institution
-
- In other words, you could write a legal, cashable check on a cocktail
- napkin, as long as the above rules were satisfied. (This just means that
- it can be legally cashed. I wouldn't suggest ditching your checkbook and

-
- First, I don't speak for Xerox. My opinions are my own. Nothing expressed
- herein is Xerox policy or opinion, official or otherwise.
-
- Second, I wrote the training course that teaches Xerox 4197 MICR Laser Printer
- Customer Service Engineers how to repair the desktop 4197 MICR printer (yes, a
- small desktop printer designed to print checks), and how to design checks.
- I'm
- not a MICR expert, but my involvement with MICR goes back two years now.
-
- I was in Webster, NY two years ago when paper trays were being hand carried
- >From Japan to Webster for registration testing. Yes, the printer is designed
- to feed paper far more accurately than the run-of-the-mill desktop laser
- printer. Is that necessary? Xerox tells customers to check registration each
- time the paper tray is loaded during a check run. Registration is also to be
- checked before running checks. So yes! Why? The American National Standards
- Institute (ANSI), X9 Secretariat American Bankers Association (ABA) Print
- Specifications for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR). The Xerox 4197
- MICR Laser Printer comes with a special MICR Gauge and 8x MICR comparator.
- Why? To verify that the MICR line and every character on the line falls
- exactly where it is supposed to according to spec. If a check fails the
- banking system (up to 20 passes through high speed reader/sorters), you, the
- printer of that check could be charged $2.50 to $7.50 for each bad check.
- Before the first check fails, and you are notified, you could print a couple
- hundred, or more, problem checks. The cost of just one batch of bad checks
- could more than offset anything you could possibly save by printing on plain
- paper! Keep in mind we are only taking about registration so far - having the
- MICR characters and symbols appear in the clear band area of the check in just
- the right spaces according to ANSI standards. We are not talking about
- character skew, spots, configuration, tolerances, voids, extraneous ink,
- debossment, signal level, format, paper, ink, or check design yet, all of
- which
- can cause a check to fail. And, we are not yet talking about printing a plain
- paper check that is easier to tamper with than a check printed on expensive
- safety paper.
-
- Some other issues: Nothing but the MICR line can be printed with MICR ink in
- the clear band area on the check. No border, no signature, nothing! If you
- are using MICR toner, EVERYTHING on the check is printed with MICR ink! Thus
- the signature you want the printer to do, as well as that nice border must
- go.
- Print them with MICR ink, and they will cause the check to fail. Print on
- normal 20 pound paper and the check may not physically survive all of the
- reader/sorters the banks and clearing houses use to sort and route checks. If
- you use 24 pound paper the check will do better physically, but if you don't
- use safety paper your check could be changed with a simple eraser. How about
- the design of the check (or, how good is the software in satisfying all ANSI
- standards). Is the MICR line placed correctly? Can it be adjusted - fine
- tuned. Are the symbols and characters spaced and placed correctly? Do you
- have the correct information to put in the transit, on-us, and amount fields?
- Do you have a MICR gauge to check your checks as they come flying out of your
- printer on plain paper? (How else will you know if your checks are good.)
-
- As to fraud: Fraud is popular, especially in this economy. Copying stocks,
- bonds and even greenbacks is popular among hi-tech jerks. But fraud is only
- good if you don't get caught. So the real expert bad guys won't print a check
- on plain paper. They'll do the job so no one can tell. The expert bad guys
- will know more about MICR printing than I do. Only dumb bad guys will print
- checks on plain paper.
-
- If you get the idea that printing checks is not as simple as it sounds, good!
- Want to print checks? Ask lots of questions. Be an expert first.
-
- The Aatrix kit? Haven't seen it. Can't say one thing about it, good or bad.
- What I will say is this - you had better know what you are doing or the
- banking
- system will get you and bury you in reject check fees.

-
- Here's more news: a Quadra is faster than a Mac Plus. :-)
-
- Anyway, Compact Pro is a very nice program, I agree; but the versions of
- StuffIt that LJONES used for his "test" are not the latest versions, so the
- test doesn't seem to me either fair or useful. With StuffIt Deluxe 3.0.2, the
- binary file was compressed to 119K--three kilobytes smaller than the Compact
- Pro archive LJONES created (above); the hexed version of the file (again,
- bin-hexed with SD 3.0.2 came to 163K--considerably smaller than the 179K size
- of the file as posted.
-
- Before I archive any file I've downloaded in Compact Pro format, I recompress
- every it in StuffIt Deluxe format. I usually save anywhere from five to twenty
- percent disk space by doing so.
-
- BTW, StuffIt Deluxe creates archives that can be opened by StuffIt Expander.
- And (BTW #2) I don't know whether the latest shareware version of StuffIt that
- is out there (3.?) will compress files as efficiently as StuffIt Deluxe, but I
- am under the impression that it uses the same algorithm, so it ought to, no?

- Fetch, GopherApp, and TurboGopher all support System 7 links to both
- Compact Pro and Stuffit. Consequently, with System 7, if you download either
- a
- X.cpt or X.sit file, those comm programs will open the appropriate compression

- looked in the archives and found some recommendations but I'd like

-
- How are fax modems different from normal modems? Software only or
- do they have special hardware? (ROMs, etc?)
- Are they reliable for transmission? What about receiving?
- How does speed compare to a stand-alone fax machine?
- What software is available? Recommendations?
- Can a modem be set up to pick up on incoming calls, scan for a fax
- transmission signal, and if none, let the call through to an
- answering machine? If so, what software and hardware is required?
-
- Please reply through e-mail or to the digest. Pointers to discussions

- Fetch, GopherApp, and TurboGopher all support System 7 links to both

-
- LaserBridge does it with much less memory and CPU overhead than AIR.
- LaserBridge is an Extension. Just drop it in your Extensions folder
- and reboot. It is so simple it doesn't even have a control panel.
- Once it's installed, you can see your Localtalk printer and your
- Ethernet printers simultaneously. However, it does have some
- problems you should beware of:
-
- First, other people on the net can see your Localtalk printer and
- print to it. This could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on
- your needs. If they are depending on being able to print
- to your Localtalk printer, remember that your Mac must be on or they
- can't see your printer.
-
- Second, you MUST NOT have any Localtalk devices on your Localtalk
- net except printers. If you put a Powerbook on your Localtalk net
- (for example), all hell will break loose (translation: you won't be
- able to print from either Mac, and you won't be able to use the
- Localtalk net to transfer files between them either.) You have to
- reboot your Mac without Laserbridge to use your Localtalk net with
- non-printers on it, and then of course you won't be able to see your
- Ethernet.
-
- If you can live with this, Laserbridge works fine.

- Subject: LaserWriter Repair Money Saving Tips
-
- I'm gonna tell you a story and then wax a bit philosophical.
-
- Last week my old trusy LaserWriter Plus (original list price $7995; current
- resale value used about $750 to a dealer, if you're lucky) began printing
- every page with an odd blotch about an inch in from the left side. The spot
- on the page varied vertically, but it was always an inch in. I looked at
- the roller on the fuser assembly and saw a gouge in roughly the same shape
- and position as the problem blotch. So I lugged my LW+ into my cheerful
- Apple authorized reseller for a repair.
-
- The technician agreed with my diagnosis and said that since the cause of
- the problem was so obvious it would not be necessary to run the standard
- $75 diagnostic test. Clearly, all that was needed was a new roller. How
- much was that? A mere $424 (including labor) he replied. Seemed a bit high
- for a roller, but the technician explained that Apple does not permit the
- replacement of the roller. It requires that the whole fuser assembly be
- replaced. It is impossible to order just a roller from Apple!
-
- I looked through Computer Shopper and noticed an ad from Pre-Owned
- Electronics, Inc. (800-274-5343). The friendly salesperson sold me a
- reconditioned (90 day warranty) fuser assembly for $199 plus $8 shipping,
- and promised a $50 refund if I returned the damaged assembly from my own LW
- to them. The reconditioned part was fine, but since I'm a klutz I had my
- usual cheerful Apple technician do the swap for his usual cheerful $70
- minimum labor charge.
-
- When I brought the LW+ back home, I was priding myself in my consumer
- expertise and money-saving abilities. (Doesn't this story make me seem real
- knowledgeable so far?) But--yes, you've guessed it. As I happily printed
- the first page after the repair, I noticed the same blotch in the same
- area. Turns out the problem was with the toner cartridge, not the roller.
- Putting in a new cartridge eliminated the problem.
-
- Moral: You do have an alternative to Apple repair prices; check around.
- Moral: Try another cartridge before assuming you really have an LW hardware
- problem.
-
- Anyone want a perfectly good LW fuser assembly with an ugly mark on the
- roller that affects nothing? I've got a spare (seems silly to return it for
- a $50 credit when there's nothing wrong with it).

- Subject: MacMoney
-
- In Info-Mac Digest V10 #270 there are two opposing views of MacMoney. Here's
- a third opinion:
-
- We've been using MacMoney for close to three years and began
- encountering significant problems when we started using System 7. MacMoney
- would corrupt it own files and then be unable to use them properly. Often
- this
- resulted in MacMoney and system crashes. Repeated contact with Survivor
- software suggests that they are aware of the problem, but really do not
- understand it. Indeed at one point I was told that certain error messages we
- received were impossible! They didn't want to accept that critical system bus
- and/or memory errors were being precipitated by their software. We received
- two successive upgrades, neither of which solved the problem. The final work-
- around suggested by Survivor was to return to System 7.0 and stay away from
- 7.01. They claimed that 7.01 was actually buggy in some routines and that our
- problems were actually the fault of Apple.
-
- The method to fix the corrupt files in not to be found in the manual -
- I'm disappointed, because it's almost as if they think their users are too
- stupid have this info easily available. There is a "semi-hidden" feature that
- allows you to rebuild and recalculate the files that involves depressing both
- the option & command keys when pulling down the edit menu.
-
- They've promised a major upgrade for close to 8 months now. I'm
- certainly not holding my breath.
-
- The bottom line: we're not too happy, but switching to another system
- would be a lot of work. Managing Your Money version 5 has just been released
- at very inexpensive mail-order prices, but the ads do not mention if it can
- import MacMoney files (it apparently can import Quicken files).

-
- It sounds to me as if your desktop file is corrupted. (2 desktop files
- under System 6, 1 under System 7.) A normal desktop rebuild doesn't rebuild
- your desktop file, it only updates it. I had a problem like yours (rebuild-
- ing the desktop restored icons until next restart) and was able to solve it
- by deleting my desktop file. The system will automatically write a new one.
-
- Here's how:
- 1)Quit all applications.
- 2)Hold down command and option and touch the escape key.
- 3)A dialog will ask if you want to force quit the Finder. While holding
- down the command and option keys, click "Force Quit."
- 4)A second dialog will ask if you want to rebuild the desktop. Click OK.
- 5)After force quitting the Finder and rebuilding, some experts say the
- system is in an unstable condition, and you should restart to play it safe.
- It can't hurt.
-
- An easier way to recreate a desktop file is with Fifth Generation
- System's Desktop Reset (aka DT Reset) a freeware extension available in the
- info-mac/ex directory of sumex-aim as desktop-reset.hqx. With this
- extension installed and the system rebooted, a normal rebuild will delete
- your desktop file and force the system to write the file from scratch.
- Best of all, DT Reset doesn't load at startup unless you hold down
- command and option, so it uses no memory unless it's used. Fifth Generation
- Systems did a service to the Mac community by releasing this as freeware.

-
- Hello all,
-
- I have been having some strange problems with my SyQuest
- cartridges recently. I think I have narrowed down the
- situation to a specific combination of inits. I was
- wondering if anyone else has had such problems. Here it
- is.
-
- I have had SQ drive/cartridge for over a year, and this
- just started happening. Three cartridges have gone bad
- in the last 2 months.
-
- I am running System 7.0 with the 1.1.1 Tune Up. I use
- Silverlinning for the SyQuest drivers, and also have
- Complete Undelete, and Access PC (all latest versions).
-
- The problem has occurred when Access PC is on. I don't
- know if this was a coincidence or there is a real conflict.
- I do know that when Access PC is off, things work ok. I
- use the cartridges regularly, and Access PC only
- occasionally.
-
- Last night's occurance of the problem started when folders
- started dissapearing from the cartridge. It was almost
- as if there was another user on a remote mac deleting files
- (my machine is not on a network). Pretty soon, the Finder
- starting giving errors on the cartridge. I unmounted the
- volume, and tried to mount it again. By then, the cartridge
- was unreadable. Norton Utilities cannot repair the cartridge.
- On the previous two occasions, I was able to reformat the
- cartridge, but problems reoccured.
-
- Are the cartridges going bad? They are no older than 1 1/2
- years. Is my drive eating cartridges for breakfast? Or is
- it an init conflict? Please reply to me directly, and if
- there is interest, I will summarize for the net.

-
- (T) = TIP
-
- For those of you who have Quadra700/900's and have gone overboard (like
- myself)
- with speed lust and installed the Newer Technology Varable Speed Overdrive,
- here is a small compatiblility tip:
-
- You may have noticed the following behavior after installing your Overdrive->
- At first all seemed great. You jacked that puppy up to well over 33 MHz and
- all seemed to work just fine. You thought:"Ahh...I am one of the lucky ones
- who get to exceed 30 MHz! Pity the poor wretches who can only pump theirs up
- to 30 MHz!" But then, as you proceeded to go about your business, you began
- to
- encounter the dreaded 'HANG'. According the instructions, this meant you
- probably had better tone that monster down a bit. So reluctantly you went to
- the control panel and tweeked it down. Sometimes even that was impossible as
- it too would result in a *HANG*. You got tired of rebooting, holding down the
- 'D' or even the 'A' key to disable the overdrive just so you could reset it to
- a lower speed. Each time it seemed to help until eventually you tried some
- new
- application or command and BAMM! The dreaded *HANG* would strike. Chagrined,
- you humbly set your speed back into the realm of the mortals at 30 MHz,
- grumbling at how long it took to reboot at startup since you would have to
- load
- all those damn clever extensions you got from info-mac not once, but TWICE at
- startup. What a pain, you thought. Oh, well, 30MHz for $200? It was still
- worth it!
-
- Well, do not despair my little children of the night (Whoops! just saw
- Dracula!)!
-
- Chances are the *HANG*s were mostly being cause not by running your system too
- fast but rather by extension clashes! ["YAY!!!!" cries the gallery.]
-
- Try the following: Take your VSO control panel and drop it into the Extention
- Folder instead. Next put a space at the start of it's name so that it loads
- before everything else (Well, almost everything. Disinfectant still loads
- first on mine, but that works out just fine, it turns out.) in the entire
- system folder. Now, when you startup, the reboot will happen right away,
- saving time at startup. This also seems to have gotten rid of all the crashes
- I was getting at first. I have gradually jacked the speed back up to 34 MHz,
- at which I have run for several days without problem whatsoever. Tomorrow I
- try 35 again!
-
- To get easy access to the VSO control panel, you can still just double click
- on
- it even though it is in the Extensions Folder, but better still, just make an
- alias of it and put the alias in your Apple Menu, or in a subfolder of the
- AppleMenu if you have hierarchical menus. Do NOT put the alias in your
- Control
- Panels folder or you will have more problems.
-
- In a nutshell: the problems seem to be software more than hardware and are
- caused by the loading of the VSO CP AFTER other CPs & Exs. The solution is to
- load it FIRST. It seems totally benign when loaded early. This also solves
- the problem of waiting during initial startup for your extensions to load
- twice
- during the reboot cycle.
-
- I have spoken to Newer Technology tech support to pass on this tip and they
- agreed that this should work ok. The guy I spoke to said that they will
- probably put this suggestion in a future version of the manual.

- Responding not as a legal expert, but as a software developer, I would say
- that when a company offers an upgrade and charges for it, they are offering
- you an improved product, not a "fix", OR a "new product at a discount
- price". The deal made between you and the company is this: They give you a
- discount on the improved version and you give back your license on the
- older version. Hence you are NOT allowed to sell the old version, OR to
- give the new version to a friend who owns the old one. Note: Bug fixes are
- a different matter. In general bug fixes are distributed free or at nominal
- cost. A good analogy would be the way Apple handles CPU upgrades. You pay
- for it, they take your old CPU motherboard, and give you a new one. I
- highly doubt anyone would expect to be able to keep the old motherboard and
- sell it to a friend. Also I should point out that people buying software
- are very lucky that they are able to get upgrades so consistently and
- cheaply compared to any other product (Excuse me, I would like to upgrade
- this toaster to the newest model...)
- >
- >If this does seem a bit hazy then an 'escape' to such legal to-ing and
- >fro-ing is to always buy a 'competitive upgrade' to the other company's

- Nice idea, except that when a company (at least my company) provides a
- compeditive upgrade, the deal is that you must transfer the rights to the
- other product to them. Now, I know that this is not carried out physically
- (Send the disks and manuals) by many companies, and I have not looked at
- the licesnse agreements for compeditive upgrades of other companies. Also I
- should point out that compeditive upgrades are often more expensive than
- upgrades from previous versions of the same software.
-
- The main point is: Software companies improve their products for two
- reasons: 1) To compete for new customers, and 2) To make money from old
- customers. The revenue from upgrades is a very important reason that many
- fine products out there continue to be improved regularily.

- Subject: Sys7.1 vs Sys7.0.1 speed report(C)
-
- A couple issues back I posted a report to the archives showing the speed
- comparison between Sys7.1 & Sys7.0.1 on a Quadra 700. Several people have
- notified me that some of the relative differences do not hold on at least
- some other Mac models. Specifically, the SANE performance on Mac IIci's is
- less with sys7.1 while it is not affected on the Quadra. I have a couple
- of comments on this and then a request.
-
- 1) Most all agree that the difference seems to be that the Omega Sane
- patches that appeared with sys7.0.1 are no longer part of 7.1. The Quadra,
- however, has a slightly different fpu instruction set because of the '040's
- built-in fpu and therefore uses math routines in ROM.
-
- 2) No one seems to have figured out why Apple dropped the Omega Sane from
- the System software.
-
- 3) Keep in mind that when sys 7.0.1 came out, NOT ALL Macs ever benefited
- >From Omega Sane. It is probable that these Macs, like the Quadra, will
- show no change in SANE performance when they upgrade to Sys7.1. With that
- in mind, I BELIEVE (someone correct me if wrong) that the machines that did
- benefit from the Omega Sane patch were the IIfx, IIci & IIsi. For non-fpu
- machines this is not an issue. The PowerBook 170 came out WITH sys7.0.1
- and appeared to benefit in that it had great math performance compared to
- the 7.0 IIfx. Has someone compared the PB170 with sy7.1 vs sys7.0.1?
-
- At this point I would like to request that anybody out there who is about
- to upgrade from sys7.0.1 to 7.1 who has the time to do me a little favor:
-
- Download info-mac/util/speedometer_31.hqx from the archives and run it on
- your machine both pre- & post- upgrade. Make sure you have the same set
- (or none) of extentions running. Save each test as a text file, combine
- them and email them to me. I will then re-post the report after
- consolidating the submissions. Make sure to include configuration
- information.
-
- Please do NOT send me the binary Machine Record files that Speedometer
- uses.
-
- This comparison is obviously easy to do if, like me you have two drives
- with 7.1 on one and 7.0.1 on the other.
-
- The resulting file should be a lot more useful to more people.
-
- Oh, yeah, a comment on the 'consistency' of Speedometer since someone just
- questioned it. That person took it to task because whereas in one
- benchmark (CPU rating) the Classic II scored essentially the same as the
- SE/30 while in the Dhrystone the SE/30 came out much better. He even
- states the reasons: The CPU test must be small enough to fit inside the
- 68030 caches while the dhrystone mark must make use of the meory bus, whish
- is 32 bits on the SE/30 and only 16 bits on the Classic II. Well, geeze,
- WHY DO YOU THINK SPEEDOMETER PRESENTS MORE THAN ONE BENCHMARK IN THE FIRST
- PLACE??????? NO SINGLE BENCHMARK is *EVER* going to be a complete
- indicator of the relative performance of two systems!!!! That is why
- Speedometer presents a SUITE of benchmarks. The CPU rating is small so
- that it does indeed test JUST the CPU and not the memory architecture. It
- is important to look at all the benchmarks to understand not just the
- differences between two machines but also the similarities. The Classic II
- and the SE/30 both have 16 MHz 68030 cpus. Therefore they SHOULD get
- similar CPU ratings. On the other hand, the wider bus on the SE/30 means
- that it SHOULD get better ratings on benchmarks like the dhrystone that
- move memory chunks around. And since it has an fpu, the SE/30 SHOULD get
- better floating point marks. And surprise! Speedometer does it's job by
- showing these differences AND similarities.
-
- disclaimer: I did not write Speedometer nor do I even have it on my hard
- drive anymore. I do know that it does what it is meant to do: compare Macs
- (and ONLY macs) against each other across a suite of benchmarks.

- Subject: Word 5.1
-
- The question was weather or not the upgrade to Word 5.1 was worth the
- $14.95 that Microsoft was charging us. Well, I just got my upgrade three
- days ago so:
-
- It depends on it you are missing any new bells and whistles that you haven't
- heard of and therefore haven't developed a need for. This is not a
- maintenance
- release nor a full upgrade--it adds more features.
-
- Probably the neatest new feature is the addition of a toolbar to go with the
- ribbon that we got with 5.0. It is nearly identical to the toolbar from
- Excel 4.0. It is also customizable wo that you can take the commands you
- use most often and put them in front of you.
-
- Next, I'd have to say that the table function has been greatly simplified with
- the addition of a pull-down table. You just drag it to the desired dimensions
- and it creates the table.
-
- Less interesting, but still useful is an addressbook feature to let you
- store frequently used addresses in the toolbar prefs file. However, it is
- merely support to an very easy to use envelope printing utility. Just
- select the address in the letter you're creating and select envelope from
- the toolbar.
-
- The last feature is probably the least useful--especially for someone like
- me who has both Excel 4 and DeltaGraph Pro--it is a graphing plug-in. It
- allows you to select a table in your document and create a graph from it.
- While useful for those without a better alternative, I'll stick to sub
- -scribing to my DeltaGraph output.
-
- Is it worth the $14.95 (+ $5 shipping)? As that only covers the cost of
- distributing the disks--yes.

-
- I own a Grappler, and am not entirely pleased by the results I get from it.
- Personally I would suggest checking out GDT PowerPrint. You see, the
- grappler works by using your ImageWriter driver, and then trying to map the
- ImageWriter graphics to your (my) Epson. Well, they don't quite. As a
- result, I get straight lines that aren't really, and text that just isn't
- as nice as I'd expect.
-
- Using Chuck's Printer Driver, I got comparitively beautiful results, but
- unfortunately, the software is not as rigorous as it might be. (I suffered
- greatly from crashes.) The advatage of Chuck's Printer Driver is that it
- *really was* a driver for the Epson. (Note that CPD still requires the
- purchase of a Serial to Parallel converter. Both the Grapppler, and GDT
- are partly this converter. The Grappler converter has more brains on
- board, to do the ImageWriter funkiness.)
-
- GDT PowerPrint also provides you with a *real* Epson driver. I am familiar
- with PowerPrint from helping set one up for a user here with an HP.
- Eventually, when I get frustrated enough by my Grappler, I'll probably buy
- a PowerPrint. (The thing is, for the money I will have spent on the two
- converters, I could have bought a large part of a StyleWriter by now!
- Sheesh! [Sound of hand hitting forehead.])
-
- In all fairness, there is some advantage to using the Grappler "Pseudo
- ImageWriter" solution, in that there may be programs that know how to drive
- an ImageWriter, (and take advantage of its specific features). Also keep
- in mind that the ImageWriter driver should be compatible with future
- versions of the OS while there may be some question about the GDT driver.
- (I'm not too worried though.)
