- In the course of recovering from a dying hard disk over the weekend, I
- somehow created a "file from hell." The simple data file was not
- locked, in use, or anything else I could see, yet the Trash Can
- refused to dispatch it. It just quietly sat in the Trash and would
- not go away.
-
- I looked at the file attributes with ResEdit 2.1.1 (Sys 7 with
- tuneup), and the only attribute turned on was INITED. And
- specifically, LOCKED was *not* turned on. Yet if I tried to change
- the file attributes or rename the file from within ResEdit, I got a
- message to the effect of "file locked -45".
-
- So I cranked up FileKit, which I had recently obtained (shareware)
- from the net. It reported the same attributes as ResEdit. But using
- FileKit, I was able to:
- 1. lock the file (no error reported)
- 2. unlock the file (no error reported)
-
- This fixed the problem, and the Trash Can then was able to delete the
- file normally.
-
- So this is a plug for FileKit from a very satisfied user. Pay your
- shareware fees!
