- ... Tadpole Technologies ... SPARCBook ... uses the exact same
- motherboard as the IP[CX] series.
-
- Nope. You're thinking of the BriteLite - that *does* use an IP[CX]
- motherboard.
-
- Right.
-
- The SPARCbook uses the same CPU as the IPC ...
-
- Nope. The IP[CX] is a sun4c, but the SPARCbook is a single-CPU sun4m.
- I've forgotten whose SPARC chip they use.
-
- For example, there is no SCSI port, but there is a parallel port
- which can be used with the Trantor parallel-to-SCSI adaptor to hook
- up external SCSI devices.
-
- This works as advertised, but don't bother buying a high-performance
- disk. The parallel port only has an 8-bit-wide internal data path,
- and it's polled frequently. So not only is the SCSI data transfer
- slow, it also has a huge negative impact on your overall system
- performance.
-
- Tadpole offers both monochrome and active-matrix colour screens,
- both 640x480 (VGA).
-
- After some practice with the mouse key and olvwm, I found that I
- didn't feel nearly so crowded as at first.
-
- You can also drive an external VGA monitor at 800x600.
-
- With a flatscreen and an overhead projector, this makes a really nice
- presentation tool. There are a couple of companies selling
- presentation graphics software for (or bundled with) the BriteLite; I
- wonder if they're also planning to support the SPARCbook?
-
- The only real disappointment is that the built-in modem is only
- 2400 baud (9600 baud for FAX): with V32bis SLIP (and later PPP)
- would be really usable. Maybe someone will come up with a
- parallel-port ISDN interface.
-
- I used it with a Telebit QBlazer (V.32/V.42/V.42bis, 38400 DTE, in a
- small color-coordinated black box) for PPP traffic, and was fairly
- pleased. Of course, it would be nice not to have to carry around even
- something as small as a QBlazer, so an internal V.32bis/V.42/V.42bis
- would be even more wonderful.
