  14. Having installed the SLS 0.98.1 distribution, then upgraded the
  15. kernel to 0.98.5 + ALPHA SCSI, I have noticed some difficulty with
  16. X11 clients.
  17.  
  18. Namely, several of them, such as showfont, give the message:
  19.  
  20. can't open server "(null)"
  21.  
  22. I have tried specifying VGA256, vga256, and Ischade (my machine name)
  23. in order to get it to run, to no avail.  Has anyone else run into this
  24. problem and, if so, have they found a solution?

  26. Also - when installing X11, the server wouldn't start because it was
  27. unable to locate the fixed fonts.  I copied my .../lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
  28. from the older X11 dist. and it started fine.  As an experiment, I also
  29. used the compressed fonts, which seem to work ok.  I was trying to confirm
  30. this with "showfont".  Changing the fonts doesn't seem to affect the
  31. outcome.  I also noticed this problem when trying to run xtrek.
