- Early this year DEC/Norway started pushing DECcampus as the way to go for
- research environments. Frequently it is impossible to get money for regular
- software maintenance while lump sums for purchasing something specific is
- easier. After some thought we ordered 3 DECcampus licenses in mid February.
- The long awaited CDs finally arrived (once so far) in middle of October.
- Yet, already DEC seems to have cold feet and have started mumbling about
- changing the contents of what the DECcampus contract is going to give us.
- They are certainly right in that we have never signed a contract explicitly
- laying out what DECcampus implies, but at least I would be exceedingly unhappy
- if DEC reneges on what they promised us:
-
- 1) A lump sum for each node licensed.
- 2) A smallish sum each year to keep the CDs flowing afterwards. This sum is
- independent on the number of nodes licensed.
- 3) Unlimited number of simultaneous users (VMS) on each node licensed.
- 4) Access to all products which have a license on the CDs.
-
- One very annoying thing is that all DEC is saying to us is that the original
- terms were too generous, but nobody seems to know exactly what that means or
- what the new terms are going to be.
-
- Have anybody heard anything about DECcampus in Europe? I know that it has been
- available in many countries recently, perhaps somebody know what DEC is going to
- do? At least for our site the future of DECcampus also decides what hardware and
- software we purchase in the future.
