- Hello:
- Just a comment on the previous problem.
- I recently upgraded Win to Win3.1, previously I had been using
- WinWord 2.0 and ATM 2.0 to print to a file using the Apple Laserwriter
- IINTX driver.
- Normally I would bring these files to a unix environment and
- look at them using the Previewer on NeXT machines (Display Postscript)
- and sending the file to a Apple Laserwriter. Everything was working
- great until I started using Win3.1 and TrueType.
- Sometimes when I use equations on WinWord, and bring them over
- to the NeXT to preview, the previewer gets stuck drawing them and
- basically aborts, at the same time killing my session and logging me
- out after some 5-10 minutes of extremely high CPU usage. However, if I
- send the file to the Apple LaserWriter, there is no problem in
- printing.
- I have set up TrueType to use the Postscript fonts so, it will
- use Times and Helvetica instead of Times-NewRoman or Arial. the
- problem seems to be with the TrueType special characters or fonts. the
- reason why the error moves page is that by using the default fonts
- (postscript) in the laser, the Truetype definitions are found the next
- time you use a special character. As soon as the postscript
- interpreter find the TrueType code, it will try to interpret it and
- blow up.
- My conclusion (which is not worth anything :-) ) is that
- TrueType is fully compatible with Apple Postscript (Yes I know it is
- well defined etc), so, it would look to me like MS only made sure it
- worked under Apple PostScript. Under the NeXT Previewer (Display
- Postscript) it will only work sometimes and, it seems that since your
- microLaser PS35 is not "Apple" it is not 100% identical. So, either
- Apple Laser have special sequences they recognize or, the interpreter
- in your Laser is not 100% compatible with the Apple Laser.
-
- **FLAME FOLLOWS**
- Now, don't just go out there and buy Apple Lasers because they
- can print TrueType perfectly. Instead bark on MicroSoft (well, whoever
- is responsible for TrueType compatibility) and make them be compatible
- with the standard.
- Of course I don't know if it is de NeXT Display PostScript the
- one incompatible or if it's the interpreter in your Laser however, who
- knows how many more Interpreters will have problems...
-
- **END OF FLAME**
- Ufff. Lots of reading, thanks for staying with me, now so that
- you can flame me....
