- Top-level domain aliasing isn't really the problem here. The real problem
- is that pathalias doesn't understand domains and Internet, it only understands
- UUCP routes. The routing you show above is frequently the correct routing
- for UUCP sites that are a fair distance away from the Internet. Right where
- I live, the academic internet network (ONET) essentially forbids UUCP dialins
- and the only alternative is often a paid connection to a commercial provider.
-
- Pathalias has no way of telling whether any given site is Internet or not,
- and routes strictly according to the maps. By policy, many Internet sites don't
- list other internet connections - why bother because conceptually every internet
- site *is* connected together.
-
- HOWEVER, Unpackmaps allows you to cheat and "short-circuit" all domained addresses.
- Ie, you can specify that all domained addresses are sent to a specific site
- for resolution. Eg:
-
- any.domain foo!bar!fee!foo!any.domain!user
- goes to:
- any.domain uunet!any.domain!user
