- I have used ftp for a long time to xfer files but lately i find myself using
- gopher more and more for this, i like the way TurboGopher lets me browse
- around and automatically launches my extractor programs. Having come from a
- Dos shop to the Mac I was a first puzzled why mac archies stored files in
- .hqx format instead of .sit or .cpt or whatever...
-
- Now i see a real advantage to this. I still FTP dos stuff but gopher all my
- mac files, it is just so darn convient. If a dos gopher client could do the
- same thing it would make getting files much easier - i could set up client
- for all new users and let them go at it without much support.
-
- For example, if i encoded the .zip files in my archive site then people
- with dos machines could get them and the client would uud them back
- to the .zip format. It might even offer to extract them.
-
- Is this a stupid idea? I'm sure it's been thought of before - what are
- the reasons against it?
-
- just wondering....
