- There are two points here worth mentioning. First, Fido systems don't
- recognize any rights of privacy in terms of email. Many sysops actually post
- warnings up front that mail may be subjected to reading before it leaves that
- system. Sysops may not *edit* mail, but they do indeed have the right to read
- it, and to not pass it along if the contents would cause them to become one of
- those horror stories you read about.
-
- Secondly, those horror stories are *true*. Sure, a university or corporate
- site exchanging mail in the Internet or via uucp isn't going to get popped and
- have their equipment confiscated, but BBS sysop are truly targets of such
- investigations. The stories of nightmares such as the one that Steve Jackson
- Games went through have been well told, and sysops are quite aware that they
- could one day receive a visit from the SS or FBI, simply because of email
- posted on their system. No, your basic amateur system is at risk, and if not
- passing through email with illegal content will help reduce that risk, I
- understand the situation.
-
- I run my site like a standard uucp system, and I'm hoping that will be a
- sufficient explanation should problems occur. When I was in Fidonet, however,
- I did look over email that *originated* on my system. Nowadays, I've got too
- many users on too many different mailing lists. I'd go nuts trying to review
- everything.
-
- followups to alt.bbs, since this has gotten way away from Waffle.
