- DIGITAL SHOWCASES NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING
- SOLUTIONS AT SUPERCOMPUTING '92 SHOW
-
-
- ... Provides INTERNET access for conference attendees ...
-
-
- MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- November 17, 1992 -- At the IEEE Supercomputing
- '92 conference, here, Digital Equipment Corporation is introducing a
- cooperative marketing program to support entry-level supercomputing,
- and demonstrating applications for its high-performance computing
- (HPC) platforms in Booth 102. The company is also providing INTERNET
- access for show attendees via Digital terminals, workstations and
- servers.
-
- "Digital's commitment to supercomputing and the HPC market dates
- back 30 years, and has helped to shape our current strategy," said
- William Demmer, Digital's vice president of Alpha and VAX systems
- group. "We provide customers with the most complete and integrated
- solutions, and the best price/performance of HPC systems in the
- industry."
-
- Digital's HPC strategy harnesses power from the industry's most
- prominent technologies -- superscalar RISC processing, vector
- processing, and massively parallel processing -- then combines
- hardware with applications software and "middleware" to provide
- multi-platform support in an open, integrated environment. This
- environment provides flexibility, portability, and transparent user
- access -- regardless of the HPC applications and platforms involved
- -- for traditional supercomputing sites, as well as HPC users in
- mainstream commercial organizations.
-
- DIGITAL HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING ANNOUNCEMENTS
-
- New HPC offerings are strengthening Digital's leading role in
- the supercomputing industry and are making its HPC solutions even
- more affordable and accessible for mainstream users. These
- announcements include:
-
- o SUPERCOMPUTING APPLICATIONS COOPERATIVE MARKETING PROGRAM
- (November 17) -- At the show, Digital is introducing a
- cooperative marketing program to facilitate support for
- applications for the CRAY Y-MP EL system. Two leading
- supercomputing application developers have already signed on.
-
- Digital sells, markets, distributes and services the CRAY
- Y-MP EL supercomputers based on a business partnership with
- Cray Research announced earlier this year.
-
- o ALPHA AXP SYSTEMS (November 10) -- Digital's Alpha AXP
- computing is a complete set of systems, software,
- applications and services that provides a universal platform
- enabling unlimited open computing possibilities. The
- first-generation of Alpha AXP systems includes seven
- workstation and server configurations ranging from desktop
- to mainframe-class systems. They run both Open VMS AXP,
- Digital's industry-standard operating environment, and DEC
- OSF/1 AXP, a standards-compliant UNIX operating environment.
-
- Alpha AXP systems complement Digital's DECmpp and CRAY Y-MP
- EL offerings to provide the widest range of HPC solutions in
- the industry, from the datacenter down to the desktop.
-
- These systems take advantage of the thousands of applications
- and layered software products developed over the years for
- Digital's computing solutions. Extensive application
- development and migration programs protect customer
- investment, provide flexible choice and ease migration to
- Alpha AXP regardless of the customer's preferred environment.
- (See Alpha AXP press materials for more information.)
-
- o DECmpp SOFTWARE (October 26) -- The PARASPHERE Software
- Environment is Digital's integrated approach to satisfy
- customer's comprehensive software requirements for DECmpp
- systems. The package includes a high-performance Fortran
- compiler and the new DECmpp Digital Parallel Programming
- Environment (which features DEC FUSE, Digital's UNIX-based
- CASE development toolkit) to enhance application development
- capabilities.
-
- o DECmpp 12000/Sx SYSTEM MODEL 200 (October 26) -- DECmpp
- 12000/Sx Model 200 systems range from 1,024 to 16,384
- processors and can operate from 150 to 2400 MFLOPS (Millions
- of Floating Point Operations per Second). They are more than
- four times faster than the earlier Model 100 systems.
-
- o DECmpp 12000/Mx SYSTEM MODEL 100 (September 29) -- The DECmpp
- 12000/Mx system Model 100 is Digital's first MIMD (multiple-
- instruction, multiple-data) system. It is available in two
- configurations with either 16 or 32 Intel i860 processors,
- and 16 or 32 MBytes of memory per processor. It operates
- from 960 to 1920 MFLOPS, and will stimulate leading-edge
- application development.
-
-
- DIGITAL DEMONSTRATIONS AT SUPERCOMPUTING '92
-
- Digital will demonstrate the following HPC solutions at its
- booth: high-performance graphics, advanced molecular simulation,
- seismic modeling, financial modeling, medical imaging, image
- processing (including enhancement of images generated from data
- transmitted by the Hubble space telescope), visualization, and radar
- tracking. Digital will also show distributed computing in cooperation
- with Cray Research Inc. A CRAY Y-MP EL supercomputer in the Digital
- booth will be linked using FDDI over SCInet (the show's network
- backbone) to a CRAY Y-MP EL supercomputer and a CRAY Y-MP 2E system
- in the Cray Research booth.
-
- INTERNET ACCESS
-
- Digital's Minneapolis office contributed over 40 terminals,
- workstations, and corresponding servers to provide access to the
- worldwide INTERNET network. Supercomputing '92 attendees whose
- organizations have E-mail systems linked to INTERNET will be able
- to use this facility to stay in touch with their offices during the
- show via Digital desktop devices that are located in rooms 205 C-D
- at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
-
- Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
- Massachusetts is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer
- systems, software and services. Digital pioneered and leads the
- industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor computing.
- Digital and its business partners deliver the power to use the best
- integrated solutions - from desktop to data center - in open
- information environments.
