  28. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- November 17, 1992 -- At the IEEE Supercomputing 
  29. '92 conference, here, Digital Equipment Corporation is introducing a 
  30. cooperative marketing program to support entry-level supercomputing,  
  31. and demonstrating applications for its high-performance computing 
  32. (HPC) platforms in Booth 102.  The company is also providing INTERNET 
  33. access for show attendees via Digital terminals, workstations and 
  34. servers.   
  35.  
  36.      "Digital's commitment to supercomputing and the HPC market dates
  37. back 30 years, and has helped to shape our current strategy," said
  38. William Demmer, Digital's vice president of Alpha and VAX systems 
  39. group.  "We provide customers with the most complete and integrated
  40. solutions, and the best price/performance of HPC systems in the
  41. industry."

  43.      Digital's HPC strategy harnesses power from the industry's most
  44. prominent technologies -- superscalar RISC processing, vector 
  45. processing, and massively parallel processing -- then combines 
  46. hardware with applications software and "middleware" to provide 
  47. multi-platform support in an open, integrated environment.  This 
  48. environment provides flexibility, portability, and transparent user 
  49. access -- regardless of the HPC applications and platforms involved 
  50. -- for traditional supercomputing sites, as well as HPC users in 
  51. mainstream commercial organizations.

  53. DIGITAL HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING ANNOUNCEMENTS

  55.      New HPC offerings are strengthening Digital's leading role in 
  56. the supercomputing industry and are making its HPC solutions even 
  57. more affordable and accessible for mainstream users.  These 
  58. announcements include:

  60.      o  SUPERCOMPUTING APPLICATIONS COOPERATIVE MARKETING PROGRAM 
  61.         (November 17) -- At the show, Digital is introducing a 
  62.         cooperative marketing program to facilitate support for 
  63.         applications for the CRAY Y-MP EL system.  Two leading 
  64.         supercomputing application developers have already signed on.

  66.          Digital sells, markets, distributes and services the CRAY 
  67.         Y-MP EL supercomputers based on a business partnership with 
  68.         Cray Research announced earlier this year.

  70.      o  ALPHA AXP SYSTEMS (November 10) -- Digital's Alpha AXP 
  71.         computing is a complete set of systems, software, 
  72.         applications and services that provides a universal platform 
  73.         enabling unlimited open computing  possibilities.  The 
  74.         first-generation of Alpha AXP systems includes  seven 
  75.         workstation and server configurations ranging from desktop  
  76.         to mainframe-class systems.  They run both Open VMS AXP, 
  77.         Digital's industry-standard operating environment, and DEC 
  78.         OSF/1 AXP, a standards-compliant UNIX operating environment.

  80.          Alpha AXP systems complement Digital's DECmpp and CRAY Y-MP 
  81.         EL offerings to provide the widest range of HPC solutions in 
  82.         the industry, from the datacenter down to the desktop.

  84.          These systems take advantage of the thousands of applications 
  85.         and layered software products developed over the years for 
  86.         Digital's computing solutions.  Extensive application 
  87.         development and migration programs protect customer 
  88.         investment, provide flexible choice and  ease migration to 
  89.         Alpha AXP regardless of the customer's preferred environment.

  92.      o  DECmpp SOFTWARE (October 26) -- The PARASPHERE Software 
  93.         Environment is Digital's integrated approach to satisfy 
  94.         customer's comprehensive software requirements for DECmpp 
  95.         systems.  The package includes  a high-performance Fortran 
  96.         compiler and the new DECmpp Digital  Parallel Programming 
  97.         Environment (which features DEC FUSE, Digital's UNIX-based 
  98.         CASE development toolkit) to enhance application development 
  99.         capabilities.

  101.      o  DECmpp 12000/Sx SYSTEM MODEL 200 (October 26) -- DECmpp 
  102.         12000/Sx Model 200 systems range from 1,024 to 16,384 
  103.         processors and can operate from 150 to 2400 MFLOPS (Millions 
  104.         of Floating Point Operations per Second).  They are more than 
  105.         four times faster than the earlier Model 100 systems.

  107.      o  DECmpp 12000/Mx SYSTEM MODEL 100 (September 29) -- The DECmpp 
  108.         12000/Mx system Model 100 is Digital's first MIMD (multiple-
  109.          instruction, multiple-data) system.  It is available in two 
  110.         configurations with either 16 or 32 Intel i860 processors, 
  111.         and 16 or 32 MBytes of memory per processor.  It operates 
  112.         from 960 to 1920 MFLOPS, and will stimulate leading-edge 
  113.         application development.

  116. DIGITAL DEMONSTRATIONS AT SUPERCOMPUTING '92

  118.      Digital will demonstrate the following HPC solutions at its 
  119. booth: high-performance graphics, advanced molecular simulation, 
  120. seismic modeling, financial modeling, medical imaging, image 
  121. processing (including enhancement of images generated from data 
  122. transmitted by the Hubble space telescope), visualization, and radar 
  123. tracking. Digital will also show distributed computing in cooperation 
  124. with Cray Research Inc.  A CRAY Y-MP EL supercomputer in the Digital
  125. booth will be linked using FDDI over SCInet (the show's network
  126. backbone) to a CRAY Y-MP EL supercomputer and a CRAY Y-MP 2E system
  127. in the Cray Research booth.

  129. INTERNET ACCESS 
  130.  
  131.      Digital's Minneapolis office contributed over 40 terminals,
  132. workstations, and corresponding servers to provide access to the
  133. worldwide INTERNET network.  Supercomputing '92 attendees whose
  134. organizations have E-mail systems linked to INTERNET will be able
  135. to use this facility to stay in touch with their offices during the
  136. show via Digital desktop devices that are located in rooms 205 C-D
  137. at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
