  28. MAYNARD, Mass. -- November 16, 1992 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
  29. announced today that it will extend its relationship with Microsoft 
  30. by reselling Microsoft Access and by porting DEC Rdb, Digital's
  31. strategic relational database, to Microsoft's Windows NT operating
  32. system.

  34.      Microsoft Access is a database management system for the 
  35. Windows operating system that provides easy-to-use features and 
  36. powerful data access for PC users. It is a complete desktop database 
  37. system that includes forms, report generator, and graphical query 
  38. tools.

  40.      Using the recently announced Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)
  41. client driver for Digital's Rdb database, a Microsoft Access PC user
  42. can access, modify, upload and download Rdb data to and from Windows 
  43. environments. This will enable an entire new class of Rdb users to 
  44. take their data with them. Through Microsoft Access applications, 
  45. Rdb users will be able to review, modify, and add to their data 
  46. while away from the office using their laptops or PCs.  When these 
  47. 'mobile users' return to the office, they can easily upload their 
  48. data back into the Rdb production database.

  50.      ODBC is an emerging industry standard for client-server 
  51. database access. ODBC allows users to easily access, modify, upload 
  52. and download Rdb data to and from Windows environments. Customers' 
  53. investments in their Rdb database is enhanced by connectivity to 
  54. current and future Windows-based ODBC applications.

  56.      "Microsoft and Digital have worked together since the inception 
  57. of the SQL Access Group and this agreement further signifies their 
  58. shared commitment to the goal of providing a "shrink wrapped" API 
  59. (Application Programming Interface) to the PC industry," said Chuck 
  60. Rozwat, Digital's Database Manager.

  62.      Digital also announced that the DEC Rdb relational database 
  63. will be ported to Microsoft's Windows NT platform on Alpha AXP 
  64. architecture.  DEC Rdb is the leading database on the OpenVMS 
  65. operating system with over 25,000 development licenses sold 
  66. worldwide.

  68.      "Digital's Information Network strategy is to integrate 
  69. heterogeneous data managers from multiple vendors and platforms," 
  70. said Hans Gyllstrom, Vice President of Digital's Network Application
  71. Support (NAS) Group. "By making Rdb available on the Windows NT 
  72. platform, Digital is protecting its customers' investments and 
  73. enhancing the Information Network for all present and future 
  74. customers."

  76.      Gyllstrom added, "Digital has thousands of customers who rely 
  77. on Rdb to run critical production applications on VAX systems. These 
  78. same customers will want the ability to easily migrate their 
  79. applications and databases to the Windows NT platform over time. DEC 
  80. Rdb for NT AXP will provide customers with an open production 
  81. environment offering industry-leading performance, functionality and
  82. cost-effectiveness."

  92. DEC Rdb for NT AXP database in the near future.
