  35. This thing has been bandied around for a while on alt.usage.english.
  36. No-one has come up with any hard evidence for the supposed
  37. etymology [width of stick used for beating] and the alternative
  38. explanation of the first joint of the thumb as a convenient, but
  39. approximate standard of measurement seems so much more convincing.

  41. I suspect sexual politics underlies the alternative 'explanation'.
  42. The message that it carries is 'look how deeply violence against
  43. women is embedded in the language!'. I would, indeed find this
  44. very disturbing if I believed it.
