- This thing has been bandied around for a while on alt.usage.english.
- No-one has come up with any hard evidence for the supposed
- etymology [width of stick used for beating] and the alternative
- explanation of the first joint of the thumb as a convenient, but
- approximate standard of measurement seems so much more convincing.

- I suspect sexual politics underlies the alternative 'explanation'.
- The message that it carries is 'look how deeply violence against
- women is embedded in the language!'. I would, indeed find this
- very disturbing if I believed it.
