- The one thing that I would caution you on is that as I saw your list
- of databases.. and one thing you may want to be VERY careful on is that
- although all those years are available, alot of times only the MOST
- current will be used. We only bought 3 years of the Business Abstract
- File (BUSI for NOTIS) and as it was we had over a million records.
- We have had a challenge trying to fit in all the data that we want since
- the original estimates that come with the NOTIS loaders are based (I
- believe) on their test data.. I think that NOTIS should seriously revise
- their estimates based on the REAL experience of current sites (maybe via
- a poll??) and update their documentation accordingly. There is nothing like
- the feeling of BUYING the data from the vendor, providing space estimates
- for your computing center, maybe buying or installing dedicated volumes,
- then find out that the estimates were way off and cannot acommodate your
- file plus the other 4 files that are part of each MDAS file (the MHI and
- each of 3 Keyword related files). I really don't see a survey like this
- being a large effort.. especially if some sites were willing to provide
- some of the data via email (such as number of records, total space per
- file (bib, MHI, 3 keyword files) and also pad space included (such as
- 20% free for growth, Years backdata, etc) Its silly that we have to have new
- sites REINVENTING the wheel each time with the same databases.
