  19. Of course they are! There's money to be made from all walks of musical
  20. life, and the non-mainstream bands signed either directly to major
  21. labels or to smaller labels licencing to the majors are groomed for
  22. stardom almost as much as your Euphorias or your Melissas. Think of some
  23. of the current indie successes - the Clouds (Polydor) Underground Lovers
  24. (Polydor), Frente (Mushroom), Def FX (EMI), etc etc etc...

  26. Take the case of Def FX in particular; a band that, while ostensibly
  27. signed to an independant and releasing EPs through MDS, was all the
  28. while actually signed to EMI, who happily paid all recording and
  29. promotional costs while the band gained "indie cred" by not sharing
  30. record labels with Slim Dusty. The album then appears and all of a
  31. sudden in interviews Fiona Horne is happily announcing that since
  32. signing to EMI she's found that there IS artistic freedom at the
  33. majors...! :-)
