  26. JOB SUMMARY

  28. The Lecturers will provide academic support in the areas of Computer
  29. Graphics and Artificial Intelligence under the general direction of the
  30. Head of Department.
  31.  
  32. The Department of Computer Science is a large multi-campus department with
  33. an enrolment of approximately 650 equivalent full time students in its
  34. courses and a staff establishment of approximately 55.

  37. The following courses are offered by the Department:
  38.     .  Bachelor of  Applied Science (Computer Science).
  39.     .  Bachelor of Applied Science Honours (Computer Science).
  40.     .  Graduate Diploma  in Computing Studies.
  41.     .  Graduate Diploma in Knowledge Based Systems.
  42.     .  Post Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering.
  43.     .  Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Applied Science in Information
  44. Systems.
  45.     .  Master of Applied Science (by Coursework) in Information Technology.
  46.     .  Master of Applied Science and PhD (by Research).
  47.     .  The Department also offers a range of service subjects to other
  48. departments.

  50. In addition to the above programs, the Department has a heavy involvement
  51. in research and development principally in the areas of database systems,
  52. computer graphics, artificial intelligence and software engineering.
  53.  
  54. The teaching programs of the Department cover the areas of programming
  55. languages and methodology, computer architecture, systems analysis and
  56. design, theory of computation, database systems, computer graphics,
  57. artificial intelligence, software engineering, formal methods, data
  58. communications and networks, operating systems, systems programming and
  59. compiler design.

  61. The Department operates two multi-processor Encore Multimax computer
  62. systems (both due for repacement in 1993), a Sun 4 mini-computer and a
  63. VAXll/750 all running UNIX.  A wide range of computer laboratories and
  64. networked workstations are available for teaching and research.  Students
  65. also make use of the RMIT Advanced Computer Graphics Centre laboratories
  66. and the University's central mainframes and super-computer facilities.

  74. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  75.  
  76. The applicant should have a higher degree in Computer Science (preferably a
  77. PhD) or a degree plus significant industrial experience in the appropriate
  78. area.  Evidence of quality tertiary teaching and experience in an academic
  79. environment would be an advantage.

  82. DUTIES
  83.  
  84. The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Department for:
  85.  
  86. 3.1    Carrying out teaching, assessment and other academic functions
  87. primarily in 
  88.     the area of Computer Graphics/Artificial Intelligence but also in other
  89. areas 
  90.     from the list above;
  91.  
  92. 3.2    Supervising projects and thesis, carrying out  research;
  93.  
  94. 3.3    Assisting with administrative functions of the Department and the
  95. University;  and
  96.  
  97. 3.4    Performing other appropriate duties as required by Head of Department.

  100. may 
  101.     be required to teach at the RMIT Bundoora campus.
