- 1) To the person who posted the 12-part GIF... usually it's a
- lot more polite to simply say that you have the GIF and then people can e-mail
- you privately for it, or to put it on an FTP site. Not everyone has the program
- to read a GIF, and certainly not everyone wqants something that huge flooding
- their account from out of nowhere. =)

-
- First of all, this is USENET. The prohibition against posting
- GIFs is to LISTSERVERs. With LISTSERVERS, everyone gets an e-mail
- copy of every posting in their own mail box. With USENET, only one copy
- is sent to each node and everybody reads and/or downloads a copy of each
- message they want. There are, in fact, entire USENET groups dedicated to
- posting GIFs. While it might be argued that a GIF would be more appropriately
- posted to a group like alt.binaries.pictures, it shouldn't be flooding
- anyone's _account_ if it is posted here.
-
- Second, in return for reading through my pedantic ramblings, I offer
- the following conciliatory information:
-
- Some of the dedicated members of the VAMPYRES listserver have created
- an FTP archive site (actually, several of them, I believe.) One of these
- sites is run by Cat (FLEXNER@CS.UWINDSOR.CA) There is an area set up
- for vampire GIFs. It is virtually empty at the moment, so don't flood the
- machine. If you FTP FTP.CS.UWINDSOR.CA and move to the
- PUB/LOCAL/TEXT/VAMPYRES/PICS/INCOMING directory and leave the image
- there, everyone, including most of the members of the listserver VAMPYRES
- group could get at it. Don't forget to set your filemode to BINARY.
-
- As always, please be polite by limiting your system-intensive FTPing
- to non-peak hours (like after 5 p.m. and before 7 a.m.)
-
- Also, most servers have an INCOMING directory to which everyone
- has write rights. On some systems, you cannot read from the INCOMMING
- directory. You should be able to put stuff on WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU
- among others, as well.
-
- I hope this has been helpful. Direct comments to me via e-mail
- since I barely have time to read my mail, much less muck about USENET
- every day ...
