- What then, O mighty poo-bah, _is_ the end all and be-all of vampire mythos?
- The major innovation of WW and Anne Rice is, for the first time, look globally,
- at FOLKlore as a cross-cultural medium, and try to put it all together.
- WHY do most socieities (I know of but one that specifically does not) have
- legends of a creature similar to a vampire. The vampire, as seen by Romans,
- was something akin to the Christian notion of succubus, ie it took blood, but
- gave you bliss in return. Also, it did not kill. Eack of these FOLKlore
- elements were created for a specific purpose, NONE of which were entirely
- altruistic. The only reason you can fall on the Make a Buck arguement is that
- only in the past 200 years has the middle class possessed enough disposable
- income to encourage writers to make a living on what had been done for
- cheap thrills. This "cheap thrill" could have been on _some_ medium of
- exchange similar to the one we have now, just no currency. The speculation
- of WW is a phenomenological one, speculating that vampires, because they
- ARE such spiritual creatures, tend to think and organize themselves in
- symbolic terms (thirteen tribes of Israel = 13 clans of Camarilla). One day
- much of what Rice and WW establish WILL be folklore, the folklore of OUR
- time, just as Amos and Andy formed much of the folklore of my father's
- generation (yeah, he's old). There is no such entity as FAKElore, since
- ALL work is done for a reason, wherther to please an audience, or the
- pleading of the almighty dollar. Whatever a society hears thinks fells
- makes an impression on the folklore of that time. This is simply ONE
- example. BS' Dracula, with Dracula walking out in the sunlight in the
- movie will add another, and so forth. Any more musings on fakelore will
- make you look a bigger idiot than you are now.
