- I'm curious if anyone out there has read Geneen Roth's book "When Food
- Is Love"? This book really touched me. It's about breaking free from
- compulsive eating by amoung other things, listening to your body and eating
- whatever you want until you are satisfied. The hard part is knowing if you
- are satisfied. She was recently on "Oprah" and discussed how she had lost
- and gained over 1000 lbs over her lifetime, had been on a diet since about 12
- (I can relate), and had starved herself to get down to 80 something lbs, only
- to gain back another 80 in something like 2 months. Finally, she said to h*ll
- with this, and decided to eat whatever she wanted. At first she gained
- weight, but then she felt so free - she had let go of the diet thing - that
- she started losing weight, and today is a very slender woman. She runs
- workshops on this very thing. Anyways, she made a point on Oprah that really
- got me... she said very few of us (compulsive eaters) enjoy eating because we
- feel so guilty, and we use food to stuff our feelings down instead of feeling
- our pain. Once we stop eating compulsively, we will feel a lot of our pain,
- but what's wrong with that? If we feel it, we can release it, instead of
- stuffing it down with food. I think it made a lot of sense.
-
- She suggested that we really enjoy eating
- Eat in a calm place without distractions
- Eat anything you want
- Eat until satisfied
-
- Any comments?
